I need a photoshop for dummies book! :-)
Why is it that I have so much trouble cropping? Is there a trick to it?

k what kind of trouble are you having... because it just so happens i'm having trouble cropping as well: When I get the image out of the reader and try to crop first thing it takes FOREVER if at all to happen. I have noticed if I resize the image first (smaller) it seems to work better.

as far as sizing the crop... good luck..that was just trial and error for me and still takes effort LoL

Also interested in the for dummies book ;)

Without more info.. first impression is a memory shortage, especially with the resize comment (smaller pic, less info, less mem needed). How much ya got?

Kim, any further description on what the actual problem is might help ;-)

I have trouble dragging the crop tool to catch everything that I want in the photo.

uh, okay, is it jumpy? does it jump around and not move with the normal movement of your mouse then?

do effects filter, sharpen, or any other tools that you run seem to take excessively long to run?

It may be low memory (RAM) problems, but it also may be that you're running low on scratch disk space. Photoshop (as I understand it) makes a cache file on your hard drive that it uses to keep track of all the layers that you have, and all of the current changes that are happening to those. if you are running low on disk space this may cause problems with execution times.

Hmm. After you make a rough selection of the area to be cropped, you ought to be able to drag each of the sides to adjust to the exact area you want to crop. You can also grab the corners to rotate the image--to make the horizon level.

If this is not working for you, tell us more about the problem you are having. What version of Photoshop are you using?

Make sure that when you are using the crop tool that you don't have a size preset that is conflicting with what you are trying to crop in your image. Check your numbers on the top left of the screen and use them to your advantage. If you are trying to crop to a 4" x 6" size, make sure those numbers are in the boxes up there (or 5" x 7" or whatever).

I don't have Photoshop, this is a shot of my screen in PSP 8. I use the circled areas you see in <---here when I need to get REAL close to something. I can move the cropper 1 pixel at a time. Even if I zoom in, I can see the crop tool. I'm assuming Photoshop has this option as well? Hope this helps.
Edited to add:The right circle tells me how many pixels I'm cropping off and the left side tells me how big the pic will be if I crop right where it is.

As for the pics opening slowly unless you resize it smaller. I think wavelength hit it on the head. It happens to me when I open TO many pictures at once. If their smaller, I can open 20-30..bigger I'm limited to about 10-15

It shouldnt be a memory shortage.. *I have a fairly new computer* with more memory than my last one.. very familiar with low scratch disc stuff.. that was my constant message on my last computer.. ;) A friend is gonna take a look at it for me n see what i'm doing or not doing as the case may be lol..

The age of a computer has little to do with how much memory it has...

You mentioned that you have 10-15 pictures open... That's a lot!

I usually only work on one or two. I have extra memory overhead because I use a WACOM digitizer on my tablet PC.

The first thing I would have checked would be the presets...

I was experiencing no troubles or difficulties with 512 MB of RAM, but there may be something else gobbling up your RAM...

Might be important... use CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager and check it out..

If you have low amounts of RAM, the computer will start using the hard drives as scratch disks... But if your hard drives are large and WIN XP has already set the size of the scratch disks to be quite large, you probably WON'T get the message that your scratch disks are running out of space... Your computer will handle like sludge though...

WINXP is kinda funny with memory usage... It's got a bit of a habit of using more when more is available... Not to mention that lots of little peices of hardware and software can suck up RAM.
