I just have read this in a profile :

It has been a rough month or two for me. I have decided to remove the camera section and bump myself down to vote only, because obviously these contests are not my cup of tea. Anyway, July 16 my paid membership runs out, so my portfolio will be going byebye. It has been a somewhat negative force in my life, so I think the change will be only positive. ... Private messages are always welcome from anybody here.

The author is ladymonarda

I'm quite sure she will appreciate any support.
Sometimes things in life don't go well and it's nice not to feel alone.

This community is fantastic and it has helped me a lot .

What can we do ?
Maybe some of us have had the same feelings about the challenges ("not my cup of tea") or have needed a break , we could share them with her.

My results in the challenges are not excellent , but I realy like some of my entries , I have had good time and even fun.
Lately I haven't entered because I'm very tired and with my difficulty to walk it was hard to take photos. (I hope to be better soon and participate.)

She surely have good reasons for not renew her membership but I only wish that photography is still interesting for her.

Anyone that can produce a picture like the above does not need to be hanging up their camera.

But I don't know what she has been going thru either. If it is just the bad scores, perhaps taking a break from the challenges. Photographing on someone else's intention tends to sap a person's enthusiasm when not done in moderation.

June, if you need it, take a break and photograph just for yourself for a while -- but don't forget the fun of testing your work against that of others.

I often don't score well in the challenges, but I use them as a way to make me get out of my comfort zone.........shoot new and unfamiliar subjects, try out new ideas/settings with the camera. Often don't quite achieve what I was trying to do.....but I learn with each challenge.

Current scores are sitting at Out of the Camera 5.4 (didn't quite get the shot I wanted, but left it till the last moment to take the pics so can't blame anyone but myself) Stationary 4.5 (no comments, but can see where I went wrong with my editing.......don't ya hate it when that happens)

I ditherbated when my membership came up for renewal, but then thought about what I get from being a member here. Apart from the friendships, help and support of other dpcers....when I push myself to participate in the challenges I grow.

June.....best of luck with your Fair Weather Outdoor Gallery, it sounds wonderful!

I really thank those who have pm\'d me and have shown a real compassion for my decision to stop with challenges for awhile. I need to break away from just dp as my primary forum, if you will. I have to expand beyond the closed environment of dp.
I have learned some things from here. I asked some questions before I went on a whale watch, as to how to do it, got alot of responses, and came back with some really good pictures, for me at least. I learned a lot about taking fireworks, applied the techniques, and came back with some amazing shots, for me at least. I learned about histograms, applied the advice, and got some really great flower shots, for me at least. That is the key to why I have decided to stop with challenges for awhile. My shots are great for me at least, but they are not much beyond common, and that is why my scores have left me a bit fried.
I think that many of us make the mistake of thinking a dslr is the answer to our turmoil on dp, but there are still many common shots taken with dslrs, and the scores reflect that. It is not to say we are bad when it comes to taking pics in general, but because they are common, we get a twisted view of our ability. I know there are many out there that just don\'t understand why, even with a Canon digital, they can\'t get higher scores. I have concluded that if the scores bother me that much, it is time to find a new way to meet this photo need. So hence my choice to bring my pics to my home community through my mini gallery, and through my notecards. I will soon be putting a blurb in the local newspaper to put together a group of locals interested in just taking pics and sharing them.
As to dp, we all have lives beyond dp and don\'t always have the time to reach out to others. I am guilty as well. I am not voting as much, and not going to portfolios as much, or even looking at the challenges after they end. I am sure I am not the only one who finds time to be lacking. I will continue to take pics for myself, my gallery and my notecards. I may even start up with challenges and renew my membership once the cold days come back, but first I would like to see how I feel regarding life without dp, or at least limited dp.
Thanks again for all your support, your tips, tricks and techniques, your tutorials and the time you spent making comments on some of my images. I am not a lost cause, I do apply what people tell me, but I do need a break and a review and digestion of what I have been given in the last year through this community.
