I am about to start a backpacking trip next week, and I realized that I should get a spare battery.
I have read a number of forums here on spare batteries, and many people recommend only getting the camera manufacturer's brand. At first, I agreed with this because I didn't want some no-name brand damaging my camera and leaving me with a ton of warranty problems.
But, I encountered the following problems: I've gone to 5 local stores and no one has Nikon batteries in stock. I've also searched all over the internet, and have found nothing in stock; and I'm leaving exactly a day from today.
So onto my questions: Has anyone actually had damage to a camera from a 3rd party battery? I know that Nikon had the battery recall, but have any other manufacturers had problems? I browsed over my camera's warranty and didn't notice anything about 3rd party batteries voiding it, but I am far from a legal expert... any insights on this?
And finally, if you believe that I absolutely must get a Nikon battery, where can I buy one within a week and not pay a ton for shippping?
Thanks |

I have only 3rd party batteries and they work better. Go with SterlingTek. Good stuff.

I bought a pair of these SterlingTek batteries for my 20d and I'm very impressed. I have been shooting all week on the first charge of the pair. That includes 3 baseball games and other miscellaneous stuff.

I have chased Nikon brand batteries (and pretty well everything else they make) through countless stores around Calgary and never had any luck. I love the quality of Nikon components when I can actually get my hands on them but the echoed sentiment of every single store around this city is that Nikon is one of the worst suppliers out there. Always back-ordered.
That being said, I will definitely vouch for generic batteries. They've served me well.

I paid $22.95 for the pair of SterlingTek batteries. This is less than half the cost of one Canon replacement battery.

If they don't have it, you don't need it.
Good people, good prices, good quality batteries. |

The batts I bought from them are identical to the Canon's. I'd bet money they come from the same factory.
Avoid the super cheap Ebay batts. If their quality control is lacking you camera will pay for it.

My Canon replacement batteries (I think I bought them at B&H but don't remember now) did me lots of good. Also use special recharable camera AA batteries for flash (power2000 was the brand I think).
