It appears that if a member doesn't renew their membership, we can no longer view their portfolio. (I guess until they renew their membership) It would be great if current members could be allowed to view these portfolios.

A preference option could be made available to allow a member to have their portfolio hidden when their membership expires. (like it does now)

Portfolio images aren't a permanent part of the site, are they? I mean, are they deleted after a membership ends?

I think they just sit there but become inaccessible. If you later renew your paid membership it should reappear.

If not, they can probably be restored from an archive/backup version.

I don't know that there is much gain from being able to browse past member's galleries. But it would be nice if they were treated like the 'Workshop' folder -- not browsable, but able to link to them (such as from our favorites list).

I renewed my membership this month and my old portfolio showed up again :-)

I find I run into this while browsing the different photo galleries. I'll try to view a photo that I find interesting but end up getting the "This image is owned by a user who is no longer a member and therefore is not viewable." message instead. :( it's rather annoying...

Having it viewable is like providing free webspace to someone where all others have paid for the space. Why renew if your webspace is still viewable.

Just a thought.

That's why it would be only available to paying members. That way it doesn't act like free webspace.

It's free to the person who's portfolio it is.

Maybe a workaround would be to put a blurb on photos that are not active. Something like, "Do not click, inactive portfolio". Then the viewer will not be frustrated.
Or to be rude, "Don't even think of looking at a larger picture, this member did not renew their membership so this is all you, the viewer, will be able to see! DO NOT CLICK THIS THUMBNAIL!"

I think that the person who's membership has lapsed should not have any access to them. If others can view, and link, to them you would need to find a way to prevent the former member from doing so, and that must be done in a way that cannot be circumvented by creating a new "ghost" account. sounds like a code writer's nightmare to me. I think the site would be justified if it just dumped all the portfolio images of a lapsed membership after a specified amount of time.

The major impact of portfolios going inactive is in threads where images have been linked for learning. We so often lose some or all of the value of those threads, because folks have gone inactive or becase of portfolio cleanup; hopefully the latter reason is no longer a reason with more space available at such small cost :-)
In general it would not be prudent to leave past members' portfolios actively viewable. It might, however, be possible to maintain links to individual images posted in threads. This is not really for me to say, however, as it would be an administrative decision.

I agree as a work around identifying those thumbnail/image differently would be helpful or even taking that a step further and making so you can't click on them (by removing the link).
