Photoshop is an image editting software, and not image-drawing or painting tool. I wonder how many of us actually use a paint brush tool, and what for it is used in image editting? |

Photoshop doesn't do too bad of a job at Photo Illustraition either. The Paintbrush has a hand in that. |

I use it for masking. Big soft brush to get a blurry edge. |

I never could get a grip on the "paint" thing in PS. I just download trial of Corel Painter and purchased a $99 Wacom Pad.
Painter works very well when trying to turn a photo into a painting.
Here is a first try, it is in another post but applies here too.
Original photo was taken by Collipekel.

Using a paint brush tool for masking is different thing altogether. What I meant was actually using the paint tool for 'PAINTING'. |

Does it count if I use the paintbrush to dodge and burn? ... or for evening out solid color backgrounds?

Using the Paint Brush tool you can try to mask blown out areas of an image by using a color at a low opacity. It's very trying but it has been known to work. Don't think it would play in advanced editing here cause you might be creating something not in the image.
