OK. OT, and England is one man down. How many thing that red card to Rooney was too much?!?! And does anyone else think the Portugal players should enter the diving competition in the summer olympics?!

A Portugal/Italy match up would be interesting. Maybe they should hire some diving judges for that match.
... or the figure skating judges from Salt Lake to judge the dives. |

Boo hoo. England should have scored from one of their many chances. They never set the tournament on fire. Portugal won the penalty shoot-out fair and square, despite being second best on the park. There won't be many bets on Portugal in the semis. |

so sad....so sad.... Such a good match. No shame either way...Portugal has Cristiano who is a stud and the keeper was fantastic. But so sad....

Strangely enough .. after rooting all the way for england I switched to portugal seconds before the penalty goals...
I think Rooney's red card was justified because he initiated the bitch slapping drama. Germany's gonna win and me still seeing the brazil / france regardless..
And whats up with Beckham.. the sobbing was...weird |

It was a good game, but I found the reffing a bit inconsistent. I thought you were suppose to hand out yellow cards for diving which the Portugese seemed to be quite adept at doing.
Edit: My bad. Tenth review of replay makes me think he deserved a red card

You don't kick someone in the bollocks and not expect a red.
It's violent behaviour.
I hope England will now stop talking about how hot it is in Germany! It's not like the world cup is played in another continent and in the hottest place on this planet.
Sometimes it's made me wonder if the opposion were put on the same pitch with video tricks and they were actually playing in a much colder place and they could not play 5 minutes on the same pitch the English players were on.
Excuses and more excuses. |

Well said, my friend. Although English fan to the core, Rooney did indeed stomp, well, in the, well.....
However, as the announcer in the U.S. said, a former world cup U.S. player, you DON"T step anywhere even in frenetic action without the knowledge of what you are doing. So, unfortunately Rooney knew exactly what he was doing. Cost us the entire match. But he is young, good match, no complaints and cheers to France and Germany so says my allegiance.

Out of curiosity, if you have two players under you, where are you suppose to put your feet?
I'm not arguing where Rooney stepped, and I'm not going to argue the red card since it seems I'm wrong, but what are you suppose to do? Lie down?

Not between the legs and try to hurt a man where it hurts most. If he didn't have legs to avoid that, he shouldn't be on a pitch playing football in the quarter finals of a world cup. |

Being Portuguese, you might think I would say something like:
- We were the best team;
- Rooney's red was entirely deserved;
- We will kick France out of the tournament!!!!
- The Portuguese players are NOT divers.
However, what I have to say is:
- Neither team was best. Both fitted each other to a tee. I think it's admirable the way England played when down to 10 men. But on the penalty shoot-out Portugal was best. No argument here.
- I think Rooney should have seen the yellow, not the red. However as things were left after Portugal/Netherlands, the ref had indeed little choice, for fear of loosing control over the game.
- France will probably go through. Being in the top 4 and the only team not to have own the WC before is awesome anyways.
- As to diving: there were 21-10 in fouls commited. 21 for England, 10 for Portugal. The players in Portugal (as in other latin football nations) like to have the ball near their feet. You say diving, I say difficulty for the opposition to gain the ball.
Ah well, probably nobody agrees with me, but after seeing "divers" and "underdogs" written all over the English and US press, I had to put it out.

Congratulations, Pedro!
I seriously think that England were the more dangerous team and had the lion's share of serious chances. More fool them for not taking them. The Portuguese were/are, better holders and passers of the ball, pretty much as you said.
Portugal won the penalty shoot out on pure merit, yes, and Scolari beat Erikson for the third time on team v. team strategy.
Thanks for being there, so we can share a bit of the victory :). France will be tough, good luck.

Hi Raish!
Thanks for the congrats!
As I said, France will probably go through, but who knows?
We have an history with France, similar to yours with Portugal: lost in the semi finals of Euro 2000, lost in the quarter finals of Euro 84, both after extra time...
Wednesday please come fast... :-)
Edited to correct: quarter finals of Euro 96, not semi-finals
Edited again to correct: semi finals of Euro 2000, not 96; and quarter finals of Euro 84, not semi finals... damn weak meamory for dates...
