Nothing against you, cp, since I know people have their own opinions/perspectives/levels of photographic compentence, but I wish I had taken such a great plain shot! Hehe.

Wow you know my neck of the woods! You can get to the Callahans from Camas too of course, but I go out to Lookingglass and head west. The road actually goes through the mountains all the way to Myrtle Point. I doubt the road is on the map since its mostly just logging roads now.

Faye,
Where in Oregon did you take this photo?

Colyla, I took it about 15 miles from Roseburg on Callahan Mountain. Its on a narrow, steep, snakey road called the "Old Coos Bay Wagon Road" but well worth the drive. And you have to drive it on Sunday when there are no log trucks.

I drove up alone and it was scary because they target practice up there and there were gun casings all over the ground...

and I'm pretty sure I heard banjo music coming from around the bend... :)

LOL! 15 miles from Roseburg....Hwy 42 toward Camas Valley? or the back road toward Elkton?

I was born and raised in Myrtle Point :) Moved to FL in 98.
Have you lived in Roseburg long?

You guys are amazing. You can see how bland the original photo was. This gives me lots of ideas to work with.

Now we just need another wide angle challenge heh.

I didn't say it was a bad shot. I just said it's plain. A simple shot at the top of a mountian or road somewhere. Anyone can take that shot. You can take one too. It's just how the photographers eye "PHOTOGRAPHS" the scene, that will turn it into a plain or amazing shot. You have to work on the idea of what you think in your mind is the finished product. This photographer was asking for help and I simply tried to help them get a differnt view. I wasn't helping just to get sly remarks from others.

How about something like this?

I mainly just used a couple of different layers (in either Overlay or Multiply mode) with some layer masks. I was mostly looking at trying to bring out the light and make the image feel a bit more 3-dimensional.

Thats it. Problem now is that it looks even less desolate, and more like a painting.

Not sure what software you are using, if no photoshop...you could at least get more pop by playing with hue/sat and levels.

Maya

OK - did a second one...less painting like...I like this better

high pass
auto color
despeckle
hue sat
curves.

I like the second one best too. It still has a bit of painting feel but I like that.

None of the edits posted quite reaches the state of desolation that only Godzilla can bring...

...ahhhhhh - therapeutic.

I never, ever felt one way or the other if you thought it was a bad shot or not. I really appreciate, on Faye's behalf, all the help you and others have given her. I had nothing to add to the thread as far as editing the original photo, but I wanted to say that I liked the original shot, and this:

makes me very glad that I posted my comment.

I actually edited my post from I wish I was able to take, to I wish I had taken. Because I did realize, right after I posted, that it was a shot that most people are able to take, just as you said. So I apologize for the confusion, and did not mean to come across as sly.

Again, let me emphasize that I am very glad for the help that you have given and I do not want to make anybody feel put down for giving help.

Duck Rider occasionally has to call in reinforcements for the big jobs. Besides, Big G was collecting dust. :)

Thanks Faye, for letting me play. ;)

I like what you did with the sky in this one

Yep. Still looks a little painterly, but it's nice.

The one by dwterry is cool too. ;^)
