It's amazing to me how, week after week, the voters are so much harsher the first night.

I know I'm not posting the greatest images ever (and that's okay with me because I'm having fun with the challenges), but to dip down into the 4's the first night of voting and be up near a 6 the next day just seems pretty wild to me.

And it seems to happen pretty consistently for me. It seems that the harshest critics must be the ones who have, themselves, entered an image into the challenge and can't wait to vote everyone else down.

I disagree with you. I don't think low scorers go out and give low votes at all... There is a myth, but we just don't know what it is yet. I think people who enter to challenge vote first, that I agree, and more experienced people vote last, because they go through a few times before they actually vote anything.

That's what I think :)

I suspect the first night voters get a high out of making such a big impact on the intial scores, and get their jollies from the reactions on score threads like these.

Please do not feed the trolls, haha

In terms of voting/scoring, some challenges run hot, others run cool. Having looked at all the entries ... it feels to me this one will run cool. If so, a 6.8 will ribbon. Good luck all.

I have one comment - it says: I just don't get it, sorry.

Enough said :(

welp I am now at a 4.3. my choice was appaerntly a bad one. so right now on my home page are my highest scoring image (30 seconds) and my lowest. I have now accepted the failure and am hoping to get the brown. I have finished pretty low before but not last so, If i have a score this low I might as well get it:) so if you see my photo please help out and give me a one:) I just hope glass does better.

I should have stick to the original idea about Motion Panning instead of Motion Blur. I do see there are some Motion Panning shots. I would have score better with that. D'oh!!

/small rant
I kinda resent being told I should "rethink" my photo, actually. I've been here long enough to know that this submission does not deserve the crush of 4's that it's getting. And even if I believed that a "rethinking" was in order, no one so far as bothered to tell me what makes it so horrible so I really wouldn't have any idea where to start. The technicals are fine. The subject isn't a ribbon, but it's not sub-5. I honestly expected about a 5.3-5.5 with this one. It's not too late for a rally, of course, but my hopes of a sudden spike are quickly dimming.
/rant off

Just to clarify...

I wasn't speaking to you personally or in general. I was speaking to those who shoot for DPC Challenges or to please this particular voting public. Shooting outside of DPC is whole different story...but if you are concerned about scores that you believe you deserve and are not consistently getting then...you may want to rethink things.

If you shoot for yourself or anyone who likes your work then don't change a thing..but for high scores there's a pretty simple pattern or formula that you need to meet...

Anyway, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

Status: Your submission has been validated, thank you.

Well I Submitted my photo for validation on my own after my first comment was "i know fake motion blur when i see it and this is fake" so i went ahead and asked for it to be validated. its now validated so if any of you reading this may have been one or the one to think it was most definately fake. please concider ammending your votes on the ones that you said that to if they have been validated. I know im not the only one. there was at least one other in this thread who was told that too. I'm certainly not a cheater. i'm glad to have gotten it validated. ive never had to have one of my photos validated before. and im not un happy with my score. its not a score issue but more of a "I didnt add the blur in post" issue.

edit:does it show to every one else youve been validated when you ask for it yourself? it shows with my scores like I posted but i dont see anything that says its been validated on the voting page. weird.

Done voting. I wanted to concisely state how I feel about the overall quality of the entries in this challenge, but looking back on it is like one big blur to me now. Can't quite put my finger on why either. :)

Got home from a trip, just happened to have a shot that I could shoehorn in, and wah-lah!
06/26/2006 09:39:06 PM · #65
Just how DO you get motion blur on a shoehorn, anyway? ;)

If I was any kind of smartass, I'd have a picture of a speeding shoehorn up here by now, but do I have a shoehorn available?

Nooooooo!

he neglected to tell you that his "trip" was to go out binge drinking... he just happened to take his camera along.

vodka + 10d = motion blur

or so i've been told...

I had hoped for better, but I knew this wasn't going to be well received by all. The comments have been quite positive though.

I think a lot of voters must've liked it, considering the climbing of the score.
06/27/2006 02:17:35 AM · #72
I think I'm almost glad I couldn't enter this one!
06/27/2006 02:28:08 AM · #73
Well, I'm sitting at about 4.7 with 79 votes.

I have no beef with that, but man I'd appreciate some comments to tell me how to get better.

To encourage everyone to comment, I commented on all of my highest and lowest votes.

As I've read elsewhere, it helped me to think about my own shots!

I'm not good at math, so I don't know how to figure out what vote it was, but I do know it's a low one, going 357 down.

edit: typo
