Take a picture that does NOT look like an advertisement, that does NOT make you want to buy anything.

Wouldn't that account for the vast majority of the shots already entered...? |

Maybe I'm just not getting it... I mean, if I look at the front page right now, there's not a whole lot there that makes me want to buy something. Perhaps it makes me want to buy a cheeseburger or peanuts, but I don't think I'd be tempted to buy a piece of Utah or anything...?

The only type of image I can imagine working would be an abstract--so this would be "Abstract III" (or IV depending on how you count).
Photojournalism? No. Makes we want to buy newspapers and magazines.
Landscape? No. Makes we want to book a flight somewhere.
Food? No. Makes me hungry.
Toilet shot? No. Makes me think of pharmeceuticals.
Person? No. Cosmetics.
Macro of an eye. No. Cosmetics...
What, other than an abstraction, would fit this challenge? |

What?! You have no desire to go out and buy out your local liquor store of all the wine they have?! :P |

Framing II winners look like travel ads. The Indulgence winners look like an ad for cheeseburger and wine. The blue is an exception, and the Desolation winners don't quite look like travel ads thanks to the challenge description, but numbers 5,7,8 and 10 in Desolation could easily be travel ads.

But if you're going to stretch it like that, then KaDi's analysis is pretty much on target. Just about ANYTHING can fit into this category if you stretch it.
I suddenly have an urge to buy some candy with a bug on it :)

So if YOU can think of an advertisement that an image could be used for then its DNMC? I don't think flowers mean purfume ads, or that a landscape automatically qualifies as a travel ad. I just think this idea is too subjective. |

Umm, flowers mean florists.
Landscape, save the environment.

Perhaps, though all challenges are subjective to an extent. I wouldn't mind amending this to make it less subjective, or at least clarify it better. But mostly I like the mindset this will put photographers in. I'm not as concerned about how the voting will turn out.

The challenge is coming up with something. I disagree with your photojournalism example, by the way. That's not the same as advertising. Here are some examples of photos that would not interest advertising agencies:
Getting older? Need new glasses? Try Lens Crafters and you can be seeing the world clearly again in about an hour!
Don't let genital herpes keep you stuck at home. Just take our pill once a day and you can be out with your friends living it up again in no time!

based on some very clever retorts I've received ;), I will amend the description to say:
Take a picture that does not readily lend itself to being an advertisement for a place or product.
