After a few days of rating the images (whew! honestly its so difficult and time consuming, but its worth, because of the quality of entries submitted this challenge), im doing some update on my ratings.

this is my mechanics or systems in chosing my top 10
1. first round....i selectted my best pix on its visual impact/messages/and artistic appeal.

2. second round...based on its overall technical aspect.

3. third round...selecting my top 5 with 10s, next 3 with 9s, and next 2 with 8's. and the rest will gave them a score with 6's.

For the 1st round i easily selected my top 10s, but on the final selection 6 of them didnt make it on my top 1o based on its technical aspect (after reviewing it, some are with minor defects. so i tried to reviewed again the entries and found out that more entries are excellent that i didnt noticed on my firsr round of selection... So i learned my lesson...selecting the best is not easily and quick, you have to take more time.

in my top 10, its a mix images.

1os....a still life
....a bridge
....another stilllife with excellent reflections
....a landscape
....a wall

9s ....a landscape
....another reflection image
....another reflection again

8s ....a cityscape
....a still life

my top ten...got my votes on the following, excellent composition (some are so unique),textures, colours, simplicity, unique concept and idea. one entry shows an excellent lines and patterns. one is so classic but so effective.

to all...good luck, i hope my choices will make it to the 10.
whew!!!! this is really very hard to judge...got more three days
to finally come up with my final top 1o. So excited to see the results.

I totally don't understand why you give 5 tens, 3 nines, and 2 eights ( and then the rest are 6's?). It should be the other way around: 2 tens, 3 nines, and 5 eights, resulting in a nice curve. And why do you stop at 6 on the scoring range. It goes all the way to 1. I know it's hard to make such granulated decisions, but try to use more of the scale. With your system I would never score less than a 6; nice, but not realistic.

If I have completely missed your description here, please explain.

I try to focus on one image at a time, voting from 1-10.
10 is rare though, and I hardly ever give lower than a 3.

I don't understand why you would choose a "top ten" in voting. Doesn't make sense to me. (I've also seen people post that they always only give out ONE 10.) Why would you limit yourself, and the photographers that way? When I vote on a challenge, I give out as many votes of any number in the voting range as I see. If I see one 10 then that's what I vote. If I see twenty 10's, then that is what I vote. In any given challenge there are far more than 10 photos that deserve an 8 or above. Limiting the voting to a top ten gives a lot of photos scores much lower than they deserve.

Yes, I know everyone has their own way of voting, and that's cool, I just don't like to see unfair voting systems, and had to have my say on that. No, I don't have a photo in the current challenges, so am not concerned about my score. Just concerned about all the really superior images that will be scored down because they couldn't make it into the "top ten".

I agree with you Ihall. I have seen people talking about "picking the winner" before, too.
Not critisizing, just trying to understand. I personally vote for each photo as it stands on its own..like it is the only photo in the universe for that moment. I do not compare it against others. Just rate it at face value.
04/06/2003 11:07:49 AM · #6
I like to try to guess the winner. And when I suspect my "winner" won't win I like to tell that photographer that I thought it should- So when I get all done voting and I have reviewed all my votes (I bump some around at the end). then I go back and comment to the top scorers that I think they should win. Isn't that "picking a winner"? It's just a game, doesn't affect the scoring at all.
04/06/2003 11:12:49 AM · #7
No. I don't think that is the same. There are some who seem to re-rank/re-vote based on picking the winner. For example.. "out of all the 9's, I think I will pick this one as the winner. So, now it gets a 10 even though I thought it was a 9 photographically, and now another gets second place. Okay here's one. This will be the second in my book. The rest I will rank according to placement by the lower scores."
I see it is some voters way of choosing their favorites. So, now if someone's photo deserved even a 6 in their eyes, maybe it wasn't a favorite so it gets dropped to a .. 3? Dunno.. but this is the impression I have gotten from people who have said they vote in this manner, and I was just curious why a 7 photo shouldn't just be left at 7.

I go through all the photos Rating each individually from 1-9, based on how pleasing the subject it, it's technical aspect, originallity, and how much I think it relates to the challenge description. I also add my first opinions to some of the Photos.

I then go through the thumbnails and bump any pictures Up or Down in score, as I see fit, but not many.

Finally I go back to the 8-9's and pick out any I think deserve a 10. Usually I end up with two or three 10s.

I vote in a similar way, though I rate from 1-10. This is the important thing for me: Rating each individually . I think I usually end up with 3 to 5 10's, but have occasionally ended up with a lot more than that! I usually find that there are at least one or two that get a 10 on my first pass because the impact of the photo is very high. I don't often rate below a 4. Most photos have some redeeming quality.

dont get me wrong with my voting style, honestly speaking, i cant rate all the entries in some many reasons..but the first reason is the speed, about 40seconds to 60 min. (ave.) before the next image to appear after i cast my vote. i tried so many times, casting my votes to all entries but its impossible, so i chose the best entries and rank them. i got a so much load with my job doing all the designs and photography and besides the deadlines (deadliest). I cant stay more than hour casting my votes.

on one comment...why limit my self to give 2 tens, if the other entries deserved to get my 10s...(i can give more than ten 10s if the images are exceptional. and i can also give a dozen of 1s if the image is worst.

i dont think my style in casting my votes is unfair. For more than 200 voters...we have different style in voting. we have a free hand in selecting our best bet. The one with the BEST AVERAGE will get the ribbons. (I GUESS NO MORE VIOLENT REACTIONS HERE...JUST FORGIVE MY STLYE IN CASTING MY VOTES).. THANK YOU.

I must have misunderstood your original post, and if so, I apologize. It sounded to me like you were saying that you always pick 10 top winners rated from 8 to 10, and the rest get a 6. I certainly understand that there are many people who have limited time/isp to vote, and must alter their voting and commenting accordingly. It just seemed unfair to pick 10, and give everyone else a 6 (or below).

Again, apologies if I misunderstood you. And you are correct, we can all vote according to our own style, and limitations.

This is a very interesting discussion. I'm new here (only 2 weeks old).Yes,it is time consuming and I understand how some have developed their voting style based on that constraint.

I've tried two different ways of voting. 1.Go thru all photo's and rate only then go back and add comments 2.Or Rate and comment one time thru.

I have a mid-line vote,ie...conforming to the challenge. Might be a 4 or 5 which will vary with the challenge not the photo. Then I look at everything else about the photo and add or substract from my base. I look at each photo on it's own merit and only after I'm completely done do I go back and look at what I have done and maybe move afew around but never many. I also don't mix my voting per the challenge. I do not go to the next challenge topic voting until I've completely finished with one. I may not make a comment on every photo but I do rate EVERY photo.

This works for me and I feel I've am able to give each photo my time and consideration. I'm lucky that way as I have the time where some don't and I understand completely.

to lhall...yup, no problem with that. wont you believed until now, just rate about 77 images (only the best)...and after 5 hours (yes, after im done with my design/layout), im goin to post my comments...guys, this is the only best thing i can do...if only i got some extra time (like sherryk471), im goin to rate all the 200+ images...but it will kill my time and my job. (guess what im doin' now... im working at the same time im casting my votes..)

to shrryk471...ur right the forum here is very interesting, youre goin to learn here. goodluck to the challenge, and im waiting to see your images. all the best.

I vote in rounds and so it takes me a heck of a long time which is why I don't always vote at all - I prefer not to vote less than 100% of images.

First round I tend to just seperate most images into 3 groups - and i usually just use 4, 5 and 6 scores as handy "holding pens".

Often during this round I see images which I know I will score highly and shove these into a smaller fourth "holding pen" up at 8.

In my second round I sort the 4s into 3s and 4s, with occasional pushes down to 2 or 1, though only occasional. I'm not downgrading an image I originally felt was a 4 to a 3 - all images I originally felt were 4 or less were shoved into my "holding pen" until the second round.

Also in second round I look through all the 6s and sort them into 6, 7 and even occasionally 8s, if I think I missed how much I liked them first time around.

Next step for me is to review the 5 "pen" and see if I want to adjust any up or down.

Following that I look at that 8 "pen" and up several to 10s and 9s.

I don't have any set number or percentage of 10s or 9s or any other score to award.

If a challenge seems to me to have 50 images that I feel are 8, 9 or 10 then so be it. If a challenge has none, so be it.

After sorting everything out of the "holding pens" I do another one or two reviews, score by score to check if I've under or overscored an image. Sometimes I notice an additional plus or minus issue that I missed previously such as really bad compression artifacts that I somehow missed or a really clever concept that I hadn't understood.

And this several step process also allows images to grow on me.

One thing I don't understand is how some voters can say that they can vote on X number of images per hour where X means they are allocating only fractions of a minute to view and score each image. Even with simple straightforward images I don't think I can fairly allocate them in such a very short time.

Sometimes during first round voting I might move more quickly through images - when assigning them to my "holding pens" but I know I'll catch any wrongly scored ones in one of the many subsequent rounds.

Anyway, that's just my, no doubt rather odd, way of voting.

PS My scores don't take into account how I think an image will do overall in the challenge. If I think it's a 10 I give it a 10. It doesn't concern me whether my opinion on it matches up to the majority of voters or not.

After results are displayed I'll sometimes post a message to the photographer of an image I particularly loved but that did poorly to say that I really liked it and that I am sorry it didn't do better for them.

But I don't try to predict the winner - with my track record I'd seldom manage it anyway.
