If this challenge had been called "Circles, depict anything circular", we would have at this time twice as much submissions as what we now have (29, Saturday morning).
Even though the title PI is was “smarter” and inclusive since it concerns as well ellipses, circle arcs, spheres, cylinders, cones etc, I have the impression some people have gotten obsessed or rebutted by the number itself and not dealing with what it is related to.

Its bad enough having so little submissions but I hate to think what the critiquing is going to look like next week. Are we going to have lots of “Nice picture but I don’t see how it relates to the number 3.1415926535897932384”. This could turn out as another “challenge conformity contest” instead of a photography challenge.

An interpretation of the challenge could be "Circles" wrote Konador (from whom originated the PI idea). To conform a little more with the number, it could be “Circles, Ellipses and anything related”.
Does anybody disagree? If this was clarified, I'm sure many more will participate in this challenge.

I think it confused a lot of people. I know when I first look at it, I wonder how do you photo Pi. Thinking of the mathematiccal problems and how do you photo the calculating the circumference of a circle. I finally just photo the symbol of pi.

I guess that would be a rather safe way of doing it.

I am one of the few submitters for this challenge and it took me four solid days of thinking to come up with a creative expression that wasn't the initial and obvious choice of a circle or something like that.

I think folks are considering the creative presentation as well as the concept and I bet we see more entries before the end of the week.

I didn't go to any wild creative lenghts to photograph pi, and it is really a simple subject to photograph. I'm guessing many people just gave up on it the moment they saw the challenge description and decided to stick to the color challenge. So I think the description is to blame. It should be clear and simple so that people can concentrate on how they want to photograph the subject, not what the subject is.

I'm having a real headache over the color challenge though (seriously)

I came up with a wonderful concept on this challenge I was lost at what to do, I guess I was just putting to much thought into it and I finally explained what Pi was to my six year old and out of his mouth came a very cute idea. I just haven't had the chance yet to photography his idea, but I will be doing so this afternoon. When you are lost for ideas stop thinking find a child and tell them the challenge you would be amazed at the ideas the unknowing child can come up with.

I could not agree more

I have spent all day trying to come up with something for the pi-challenge. I don´t think I´m going to make it. The most important must be the photographing not spending hours trying to find out what it´s all about. I agree totally with jjbeguin in this matter.

I did a photo for the "PI" challenge eariler in the week and then chickened out. After reading what ya'll are saying here I figured "what the heck".I'll try anything once, twice if it didn't kill me the first time.
Good luck to everyone

Personally, I would like to see representations of the PI symbol. To me, when I see a circle or any other geometric shape that somehow relates to 'pi', PI is not what comes to mind when i see it.

Just my humble opinion :)

OK Konador, I guess it would only be fair to hear what you have to say about it, it was your idea after all..

It was my suggestion, but I am only one vote, so my thoughts are only worth as much as the next persons.

When I suggested it, I suggested it as something that people could interpret in different ways, whether it be the Pi symbol, circles, or whatever.

Everyone will have their own ideas about what they would like to see.

The problem with subjects people can interpret different ways is that many interpret them one way and won't even consider other interpretations afterwords. Again this is turning into a semantic interpretation contest, Those who will guess what most people think the subject realy is have a good head start in the competition. We are pretty far from photography here. And if "representation of the symbol PI" is actually the real subject, I do understand the current lack of enthousiasm for this event.

I agree with you, John. The Challenge says Pi not Circle or ...
I want to see Pi in one way or another.

My opinion as well. But what is equaly interesting in this case is what comes to your mind when you see the symbol PI.

the challege says pi is a number, an irrational one to be exact.. then the challenge says to photograph pi (which is a number)... not a circle or elipse, or other geometric shapes that use pi in any formula to solve the area, etc... I hope there are not a bunch of photos of circles.. I am expecting to see either numbers of or the symbol of pi... circular objects and such are right out... :oP

Well, I'm not a Full member just a Registered User but can the topic also be of something that starts with a "pi" such as pinapple,pickle,etc...
Unless the topic description mentions the words such as numbers, math equation,etc...

Thats my two cents in this.

I think if I just saw a circle, that wouldn't be enough for a 10. But if I saw a circle being created, dissected, quantified, or similar ilk, that may do it for me. I will certainly reward creative efforts at depicing pi, though I won't punish those that just photograph the symbol. I just want to see good photography when I vote.

One thing this challenge has reminded me of is that math is all around us! Yikes! And the last math class I had was 9th grade geometry!
