My husband is taking a German course and would like some movies in German to watch. I have Das Boot and Run Lola Run in my netflix queue. Any others that you would recommend?

Downfall is a good one too. Here in Australia there is an Austrian series on SBS called "Kommisar (Inspector) Rex" about a team of homicide detectives aided by a police dog (Rex). I have learned so many German words from it alone, surely worth a look if you can find it. The dvd sets are available in region 4 at //www.dymocks.com.au/dynamic/catalogue.aspx?Catalogue_ID=SBSVID&perPageItems=20&sort=6&imageoption=1&view=

Der Untergang

Haven't seen it yet, but I heard that is good. It's more like a documentary though. Just read the reviews at IMDB to decide if you want to see it.

Maybe you can get some DVD's with German tv series as well, like:

- Cobra 11 (Cobra eins eins); police serie with pursuits and lot of stunts
- Tatort; detective stuff
- Derrick; a bit old detective stuff but classic

At IMDB (see first link) you can browse on language as well.

Wait wait wait, a girlfriend once forced me to watch these, because they were so "romantic" and she was half German:

Sissi
Sissi - Die junge kaiserin
Sissi - Schicksaljahre einer Kaiserin

They are all from the fifties, I don't remember if I liked them or not, but for learning the language they are quite good. And Romy Schneider looks great.

Oh gawd! Be prepared to take a box of tissues if you want to watch those :)

This is a cool new German film I watched last year:

Barfuss

Oh man, I grew up with those. My mum even got me some earrings that looked just like Sissi's. Brings back memories :)

Sissi...... oh my..... thanks for the trip down memory lane
(I spent the first 20 years of my life in Germany).

For some reason, "Die Blechtrommel" seems to be available in so many different places. It won a number of awards, but I have no idea why. In my opinion, it is one to avoid at all cost. A dark, artsy, "intellectual" piece of &&%^$#%!

Blockbuster online has a few German movies.
Perhaps you could find a German club/community where you live and ask for their ideas, too.

Goodbye Lenin! is one of my favorites. It's an awesome story, with excellent aesthetics as well!

Downfall is awesome. The Edukators was pretty good.

Wings of Desire is good.

What I've seen of The Tin Drum was pretty good.

The trailer looks cool, I'll rent it sometime if I can get it.

Der Untergang was incredibly boring, and I found the actors bad. Sissy is pure Kitsch, but if you like that, go ahead.

Pfft, movies.. Ein Fall Für Zwei for the win. Best damn german copper show.

I bought the german version of Lost Highway off of Amazon.de

Sounds like you're more interested in renting, but you can get some good deals on dubbed movies from there.

I enjoyed "Anatomie" but it wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

Good to see "Lola rennt" in your collection. Forget all those dodgy electrical pads to give you a workout while you watch TV, I thought that movie was a cardiovascular workout in itself.

I've seen a few other good German movies here, just can't recall the titles at the moment. Will post if I remember.
