I think it would be interesting to have a ranking of all the members by their average vote received. Not for any particular reason, but raising your position on that if it was easily searchable would be an added challenge on top of each weeks. Please forgive me if this information is already accessible and I'm an idiot. |

I think that's a superb idea. I always look around at the top photogs on the site, but it's a manual process right now.

Would not this kind of change the challenge a bit. I think the challenge is to make yourself a better photographer by doing and learning, but not necessarily competeing with others. By posting average scores, we are creating a ranking system, so would my goal to be improve my rank, or would my goal be to learn to create better photos?

The people who post to 'win' the contest will still post to improve ranking. The people who post to 'learn' from it will still do that. If they don't care about rank that much now, why would they just because there was a list of people's names?

If you stop looking around for the top photos, and only look at the photos taken by the top scorers, you might miss some interesting photos that did not score so well, or scored high, but you missed because the photograher did not have a high average.

I would prefer a ranking system done on points.
Say 10 points for for a 1st place, down to 1 point for 10th place.
Or 3 points for 1st place down to 1 point for 3rd place, a bit like the olympic games scoring system.

STEINR - I'd look at both, which is the key. I think if you look JUST at a pic, that's good. If you can look at a top photogs whole style together, you may get a feel for how to consistently take them, as well. It's just another tool, I think.

hmmm. interesting feedback here. I think that if your goal is to improve your photos, then you'll get better scores, and a better rank, so it's just another useful way of comparing your progress. I also agree that it is terrible just to look at the top rated photographers galleries, but that's already the way it is and I don't think adding the rankings would change that much. Marbo, your idea is good, but it seems to only include the top placing photos. What about the poor person who always comes in 11th; they'd be placed with the people who always came in last. That wouldn't be too fair and it would rely on the number of challenges entered and not the overall average. |
