I have decided I will get an expensive tripod at the same time I repaint the interior of my house, get new living room furniture, new dining room furniture and refinish my hardwood floors -- sometime after the kids are out of that "wild-break-everything-in-sight" stage.
My tripod (slik 6600, maybe?) has one handle thing broken off and electrical tape in a couple of places. Not the most sturdy of beasts, but the thought of a three digit tripod being on the receiving end of my kids makes me cringe.
Kinda like the reasoning around here in the wintertime -- that beat up old pickup truck does the job and it won't "hurt" as bad when you slide in the ditch as it would in that new bmw. ;) |

Don't underestimate the power of a cheapie tripod...
Took these two today. No problems at all with my tripod. I suppose it might be a problem with a DSLR and long lens but my P&S is just fine.

I have a Craftsman tripod. Made tough like all Craftsman products. I'm really not sure what they cost but I got it for $10 on ebay. It has a level, a handle, a quick release head and legs, and a carry tote.
edit to add... I just looked it up, under $30 Craftsman tripod
