Please help, with advice on doing extreme macro, shown in the great tutorial by dudephil
dudephil's macro tutorial
I want to do this with my nikon 50mm f1.8 lens(=52mm filter), and the tamron 28-75 (=67mm filter). I'm struggling to find the necessary reversing and coupling rings online, and I couldnt find them at the camera store here in Melbourne Australia. I have looked at BH Photo, but they seem to be rings to link camera to reversed lens, rather than fitted lens to reverse lens.
Would anybody be kind enough to see if this is do-able between these lenses, and perhaps to show hyperlinks where I can order them from.........if you can find me a BH Photo link, I'll be eternally grateful. |

On B&H, search "macro coupler" and you'll find them. You may have to combine a macro coupler with a step-down ring.
Not sure, though, that you're going to have great success with the 50/1.8 reversed on the 28-75. You may get bad vignetting due to the large mismatch in element size. You might not get vignetting at the long end (near 75mmm), you'll just have to try it and see.

You guys are amazing.......just solved what took me ages. Thanks very very much.
Fritz, do you think I'd have more success in combining my sigma 105/2.8 macro, with either of my other two lenses? It's filter size is 58mm. |

I have a sigma 18-200 that I would like to couple with the canon 50mm 1.8. anybody have any sucess with this? Am I right that the 50mm is 52mm threads? If that is correct, and my 18-200 is 62mm threads, then is this what I need?
Thanks.

Yes that is what you need if you are connecting a 52mm to a 62mm

is this method better than extension tubes?

fstop: it depends what you're looking for.
Reversing a 50 1.8 on the end of a 105 2.8 for example gives you basically no working distance at all...you're an inch or so from your subject...
On the other hand a 105 2.8 and 68mm worth of extension gives you about 2.2:1 magnification at maybe 6 inches...
Throw on a 1.4x tc and you've got either 2.2:1 at 9 inches, or about 3:1 magnification at about 4 inches or so...

Personally, I've found working with a reversed lens on anything is so impractical out in the field it's not funny. Now if you have a table top, a tripod set up, an off-camera flash or strobe or bright enough lighting, then you'll be fine, although your DOF is EXTREMELY low when you're working like that.

Amen to that. I was able to handhold a 50 reversed in bright sunlight, but it took me about 50 shots to get 1 good shot.
But it can still look pretty cool to see the cracks in a rubber kickball.
