I'm about to buy a new lens in the next week. I've asked peoples opinion before and read the reviews (am probably none the wiser !).

I think I have narrowed it down to one of two (3?) choices and was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with, preferably both, these lenses.

The two I have narrowed it to are the Tamron SP 28-75 f2.8 XR Di Ld Asp and the Sigma EX 24-70 f2.8 DG Macro. Each has its pros and cons (sounds like the amazing race doesn't it ?). Both are fast and suppose to be pro grade (I know - its not a L but we have to live within our means LOL).

The Sigma has full time manual focussing, a little wider, macro.
I have heard some people complain it can throw a yellow caste.
The Tamron is a little longer and certainly gets rave reviews on this site.
Some reviewers complain of compatibility. (I must admit one I tried at the shop -did throw an error, they just said that particular one was faulty)
Price wise they come within $20 of each other.

Has anyone tested both ? Or knows someone who has ?

The third one that was mentioned - was being pushed by the camera shop guy. The Canon EF 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM. He claims it is sharper across the whole frame. Claims it is better than the SIgma or Tamron. I was rather sceptical about that one. But I did read in the "First Lens" thread some who raved about it.

Any further thoughts from anyone.

I have used both the Tamron and the Sigma..I am not much of a techno geek, but really I can't tell the difference quality wise..they feel quite different..weight being the biggest difference (the Sigma is heavier), the second is noise focussing (the Sigma is louder). Now if weight isn't a factor or noise focussing then the obvious advantage of the Sigma is that it is wider..but quality wise I think it is a coin flip...
I bought the Tamron in the end when I faced a similar debate..

Never tried the Sigma but count me as a supporter of the Tamron! Sorry I can't be of more help...
