Well they will just have to deal with that. I'm sure world will not stop spinning becuase they only have one choice.
There are challenges galore here, you are allowed to sit one out now and then.

Wow...what a tough choice between this challenge and the other one. Both of them are so much fun... |

"allowed to" implies a choice. |

the exif info says 20 secs but if you read my description you will see that I realised this was an error as soon as I pressed the shutter, so counted 4 elephants and blocked the lens off for 16 more elephants.
I liked the outcome so entered this one.......

wait a second (pun not intended)
The exposure time is umm.. what??
I seriously know nothing..
My camera says min shutter time is 30 sec. Is that the same..
I feel stupid........and how do we set how long it's going to stay on.
Yes Yes, I know not the best forum to ask but I guess I'm trying to clarify the challenge

LOL good idea, lets see the people tackle this one after the voting! |
That entry could quite possibly be DQ'ed for violating the "spirit and intent" of the rules. It's pretty clear that the special rule asks for a true long-exposure shot, not some circumvention like what happened in 2-Second Exposure. It doesn't say "Be creative in finding a gimmicky work-around." Why not just try to meet the challenge? You'll probably learn more and better by just going with it. If your camera can't handle it there is always the Bokeh challenge.

Have you ever tried shutting the camera's power off during a 10 minute exposure, in order to shorten exposure time? (say, expose for 30 seconds, then switch the power off).
I've never used a 5400, but on many of the Nikons with a memory buffer, the exposure is saved to the buffer during the exposure, and will be written to the card when the power is restored. A lot of astrophotographers use this technique to bypass the noise filtering on some of the newer models (noise filtering sometimes removes points of light that are actual stars).
Obviously you'd have to watch for camera shake when you engage the power button.
Just a thought. Hopefully workarounds like this can get more of the point-and-shoot cameras into the challenge... |

I seem to be too early for challenges too. This was 30 seconds. |

Since a jump from 8 seconds directly to 10 minutes sounded more canon-like* than nikon-like I investigated:
From the coolpix 5400 spec sheet:
"Exposure range Shutter: ... 1/4000 to 8s and Bulb/Time (up to 10 minutes)"
You can close the shutter any time before the ten minute mark is hit.

There are plenty of other challenges that have ruled out (or made it difficult for) certain people here... macro abstract discriminates against people who don't have macro lenses or related technology; Cliches discriminates against people who aren't fluent in English. That's life; Without wanting to belittle anyone, I'd be overjoyed if the biggest problem I faced this week was being ineligible for one of the challenges. |

yes your exposure time is shutter speed. just set your shutter speed to 30 sec or longer. if you haven't done it before practice but be aware that you will need to adjust your apature as well and it may need to be at night, unless you get creative. |

I think this challenge is a sneaky way to eliminate competition from Iceland, it´s so bright this time of year that you usually get overexposed images at 30 seconds unless you are shooting WAY past midnight :)
Nevermind, that just means I get to kick butt in bokeh instead, hehe :) |

Us mere mortals stand a chance then - whooh hooh!!! (Staying far, far away from bokeh) |

finally a challenge I'll shoot. Haven't entered much due to the lack of interesting challenges and the lack of time (combination of both) and I think the extra rules are just fine and should be left alone. |

Ok, my money is on Terje now that he has declared his interest, now it´s only a question who will get the red and yellow ribbons. Any takers? |

set your noise reduction on!!
.. it will mask (almost all) hot pixels

Agreed, noise reduction works great on long exposures! Only problem is battery capacity, doing a 2 hour exposure, and then the noise reduction needs another 2 hours to clean the image up.
If you get grain problems, bump the ISO up. a 16min ISO 200 exposure will yield more grain than a 8min ISO 400 exposure on a 5D!

Crap... Why did you have to go and say that! I can never refuse a dare and I had my mind set on the bokeh challenge! :) |
