What is this red dot that keeps showing up on my photos? About half the photos I've taken in the last two weeks have the red dot. Is it a hot/bad pixel? Its easy to edit out, but its getting aggravating.

could it be dust on the sensor?

Looks like a hot pixel. I'm not sure what you can do to fix it. There was a thread about remapping the sensor or something, but I'm not sure

Yup, hot pixel. AFAIK, you cannot map this out yourself. There have been some threads over at DPReview implying that *some* Canon cams will remap upon a firmware update, but I don't believe the XT is one of those. If you want it mapped out, probaby the only way is a trip to Canon, unfortunately.

Kirbic, Two more questions.

Is the hot pixel always present, but I can't see it against some backgrounds?

Is it against the Basic Editing rules to clone out the hot pixel?

Thanks,
Bruce

The 300D is not the XT, isn't the XT the 350D? And , I am sorry for you troubles, I would say just clone it out but then again that would def suck. If you still have warranty, you might want to send it to Canon, and read up on the re-mapping stuff

Unfortunatley for me, I also have the 300D and I don't want to get this myself

My Olympus D230 seemed to generate a new hot pixel every 20 shots. It's illegal to clone them out in basic editting, though I urge you to keep in mind that the rest of the world does not revolve DPC's basic editting rules :)

Converting to black and white hides them better...so if you're really concerned about them for basic challenges you could do that.

Yes, that's probably the case. It also might be less apparent with some settings, e.g. low ISO, or it might be completely stuck, meaning the red channel is always fully saturated at that location.

Unfortunately, it is.

If you set up your shots so that something red is in that area, it will be much less noticable.

Look upon it as the Gods of Photography handing you a personal challenge.

Is the Pixie URL work safe or do I have to wait until I get home?

It's unsuitable for any occasion. Do not view after a large meal.

nooOOOOOOoooooo!!! thought i'd never see that site ever again!!

That website is probably the most horrible thing you could do to your eyeballs or brain... whichever goes first!!! YIKES!

Anyhow, back on TOPIC...

Try your local service center... Canon has recently changed the way that they treat hot pixels (scumbags), so you may be looking at a pretty expensive fix... As of now, there is no leaked software for this...

I have emailed them a few times asking them about their current (idiotic) stance on the issue, but have received no reply (having received replies about a handful of other issues), so it may indeed be a CONSPIRACY!

heh, just kidding...

it would actually be cheaper to just count off the price of membership and do the members challenges?

I wonder if anyone has thought about doing a petition?

The cameras that I have heard that have sensor mapping automatically are the 30D, 5D and possibly some higher ups... neither the Dig Rebel nor the Dig Rebel XT appear to have this on board.

A bit of additional information... If you use Photoshop and you're not currently shooting RAW, you might want to consider this:
Thomas Knoll from Adobe recently posted that ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) converter maps out hot pixels during RAW conversion. You might want to give this a try. Set your cam for RAW+JPG and shoot a scene where the hot pixel will show up readily. Then do the RAW conversion and compare the converted RAW file to the JPEG. You may find that the hot pixel is gone in the converted RAW version but there in the JPEG. I don't offhand know what ACR uses for it's "map" though. It may be that it needs a few frames to build a reference.
