Family trip to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire is coming up and I thought it might be fun to meet some DPC'rs in the area.
Last year I visited the "Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary" in Moultonborough, NH. They have a couple of trails that are open dawn to dusk. A variety of terrain is covered on the longer hike to include woodlands, marshes, and lakeside shoreline (and a gazillion mosquitoes - take a bath in bugspray!!!).
The visitor center is also interesting if you're into Loons (the bird, not funny people!). One of the fun things they had on display was the Loon "decoy/prop" used for the movie "On Golden Pond", which was filmed in the Lakes Region (Squam Lake) in 1981. I mention the decoy/prop only because it was HUGE!
Anyway...I'm planning on going to the wildlife sanctuary on Tuesday, July 11 or Wednesday, July 12. Early morning would be a good time to get started.
We are staying at the Arcadia Campground nearby so I thought (if anyone's interested) we could put together a cookout for lunch?
A few shots from last year that I still have in my DPC portfolio (I filled up a couple of cards, but the images are on my home PC):

Jennifer - Sorry to hear you'll be out of town. Would have been nice to meet you.
I really like this image of yours
...maybe I'll get lucky and find a similar scenario while in your neck of the woods. ;^)
What's the Audobon Societies HQ like? I think I've seen it mentioned as a place to visit? Anything to see/photograph there?

Maybe... We have a house on SIlver Lake in Madison which looks out on Mt. Chocorua. That's probably 25 miles east of you. Maybe you could come for a canoe ride after? I do like to take pictures of NH Here are some from around our place. |

Concord Silk Farm Sanctuary
Its under renovation at the moment, but it has some of the best wildlife hiking I've encountered (yes, even that close to the city). The rangers are friendly, helpfull and very great to work with for everything from advice of where to go to identification. They have some raptors that cant be reintroduced to the wild in captivity there, as well as an observation tower. If you go, make sure you get out to the old apple orchard and watch for bears.
Hiking trail is here - Trail Map. I usually take Orchard Trail across the pond to Turkey Pond trail. and back to the HQ. It takes about an hour without shooting anything. *grin* The trails arent marked very well, especially in the white pine forest, so just keep your bearings as you go. :) Theres an old rusted windmill out before you get to the orchard, and LOTS of nesting going on right around that area. Call ahead about the live animal exhibits though, they moved a lot of them (though, the owls were still there the last time I went) because of the construction. It should be done soon though. :)
The Loon Festival will be going on at Markus on the 15th... Will you still be around?

Oh, and on another note - I found a pair of nesting Great Blue Herons, with 3 hatchlings on Tuesday during a hike, and will be heading back out this weekend with waders... When do you get to NH? I might give out the location to you if your nearby. ;) But otherwise I'm keeping them my little secret. :P |

I saw that, it sounds like fun - unfortunately, we'll be packing up on Saturday the 15th to start our journey home. As for your second note, we'll be coming in on the afternoon of the 8th.
One of the first things we usually do after getting there is unpack the fishing rods (after getting a license of course). The fishing is very good! ;^)

Not to high jack the thread, but I wanted to list this also as a potential GTG for the People of New England.
