First, let me say I am very happy for all of the winners, I liked all of the top three.

Let me also say, I finished much higher than I thought I should.

Now, let me rant!

There are a few photos in the top twenty that I just cannot believe made it out of the bottom twenty. They are by photographers that I respect, so I guess it is just me, but damn!!! A photo that is mostly overexposed! Blinding white? This seems to violate the basics of photography. At least everyone voted honestly, and the best photos won. Now, let the flogging begin!

The best I can figure that you're talking about is "bad boys", and I think the shot is awesome. First, it could be example 1 under the photography chapter on candids. Second, the balance on the shot is obviously very deliberately chosen. It completely eliminates what could be an extremely intrusive background, while still adding to that part of the picture.

My public speaking teacher in college (I graduated 3 months ago, so I can talk like I'm 50) told us... "These are the rules of public speaking. You can't break any of them unless you know them." The best speeches in that class were the ones that broke the rules. You get the point.

And now, my personal rave. I was amazed with the pictures this week. Congrats to all, and thanks for continuing to make DPChallenge the exciting place it is. Keep up the good work.

It is a pity that a deliberate creative decision to push the contrast in certain pictures this week is assumed by certain people to be sloppy "over-exposure." My own pic (which did fine, thanks very much) suffered the same criticism from one or two commenters.

Jakking -

I loved your shot. It was right up there with my favorites for the candid challenge. Good work, no matter what anybody says. Overexposure doesn't often get appreciated here, and I would know (heh).

I guess the overexposed look does not work for me. I find it very distracting. I do not care whether it was done intentionally or not, if I do not like it, I do not like it.

I'm wondering which photo you REALLY are talking about. At first I thought you meant John's bar shot which I must say I'm pretty let down that it didn't score higher than it did. I think it's awesome. The winners are awesome as well.

My rant for the day: The time in between score updates seems to take FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am talking about John and Magnetics photos. I obviously do not "get" these photos, and I was hoping someone could explain them to me. My eyes keep getting drawn to the washout areas, searching for detail.

I am glad to see people successfully break the rules.

I think john's shot in particular is very strong, and I like the feel of both of the images, but the post processing put them below average to me as they both became distracting. I would like to see the originals of both.

My first submission is in the top 20 and I myself would have given it a four! This IS a great PIG. But it is NOT a great photo. I really want to apologize to everyone that I bumped down. I posted a critique of myself on the picture is anyone was fooled by my cute pig. However, I must add that as a PET, the pig is the sweetest thing ever and I love her to death.

I see a lot of new styles to photography everyday. I've enjoyed seeing the outside the box styles. This type, the blurs...just some great stuff. I for one just love the look of John's. It's not something you can put in words. It just works. I find it a superb photo:)

But the subject was candid. You caught a sweet moment, and I think the voters responded. I could agree with alot of the comments you made on your own photo, but then, we're still left with a sweet shot.

The only point I agree with is the blade of grass, and think the colors and the focus look fine. I think it is a nice photo too.
