Some assistance on goal setting.

A reasonable goal for sustainable weight loss is 1.5 pounds of fat per week. You may lose more scale weight but you also lose muscle. An agressive loss goal is 2 pounds a week. Keep that in mind as you set your 8 week goals.

The strongest programs with the most noticable results combine high intensity, low duration cardio 3 days a week and weight lifting 3 days a week.

Eating 5-6 smaller balanced meals a day will help you increase your metabolic rate and help make you a more effective fat burner.

Again, you may use ANY program for the next 8 weeks. The goal here is to have fun, and feel better about yourself at the end of 8 weeks. :)

Not program related, Fitday is also a handy little website (free) where you can track food, weight, exercise, etc. Especially fun for you statsy people. :)

hey do our before photos have to be in "tight" clothing? the thought of taking a pic of myself in tight cloting makes me want to puke. but i know itll make it easier to tell the diff. between before and after. just wondering because i have a pretty good picture from last weeks vacation but im fully clothed in it thank goodness. i might have a stroke if i need to take a pic of my 250 lb. self in something tight.

Actually, you really want to be in shorts and bikini/bra top ideally. BUT- I know not everyone is mentally ready for that. Keep in mind the more clothing you have on- the harder it is for the judges to see the end results.

Remember, the fun part of starting pictures...you never look like that again. :)

Again- the ONLY people who see these are the judges. I'm not posting them up anywhere. I'm just holding them for judging. That's it. They live on my hard drive, and will be returned/deleted at the end of the challenge.

If you are saying, "oh my gosh I can't take a picture of myself wearing next to nothing...then that may be a hint you need this whole process. :) ) Before pictures are a very, very powerful force for change.

I had the same question.

what about a one-piece bathing suit and shorts?

I figure my stretch marks are for my eyes only. hahahahah

(not trying to be difficult, just wondering.)

It's about you being comfortable.

Taking before shots is hard. No doubt there. I treasure mine though. It's a symbol of where I was, and where I never plan to go again. If it makes people feel better, I can post my before before shots. :)

I'm game... I've got the challenge walk for some motivation, but I think it'll take more than just a lot of bike riding to get me where I want to go.

You're right about one thing though. Not wanting to have my picture made is a pretty good hint that something needs to change.

On another subject --

In my immediate geographic area (mountains of Western NC), obesity is almost epidemic, I think. I am shocked when I look around and I am considered one of the "small" ones (and I am not anywhere near small), because I am carrying around *only* 50 or 60 extra pounds. And I know that not all obese people are lazy, that there are medical issues that can cause weight gain, but for most of the extremely obese people I know, it is simply a lack of discipline and physical activity. It is easier to eat doritos than an apple, and it is easier to ride the four wheeler the 1/4 mile to the mailbox than to walk there. (I live in the country, can you tell?) It is a bad cycle. Lack of activity causes weight gain, which causes health problems, which makes you not feel like exercising which cause more weight gain, etc.

I fear that the line "accept yourself" is becoming an excuse to be fat. It is not about pleasing society. It is not about looking like a supermodel. It is about discipline, good decisions, and taking care of your body.

I am 35 yo. I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. At my physical in March, my cholesterol was high. The good doc told me we would give it a year, to lose weight, and try to get it down with diet and exercise, but if it doesn't, we may need to consider meds. at 35 or 36 yo. that is just sad.

Sorry, not trying to preach, but there is no excuse to be unhealthy. If you are reading this, you have the intelligence and resources to be connected to the Internet. That would seem to indicate that you have the intelligence and resources to get yourself healthy.

I agree. ive always been obese(except for small periods where i could not control my bullemia in high school)and doctors can never believe how unhealthy i am. been on hypothyroid meds since i was 16(and they didnt want to believe that was my problem and check sooner because of my age) had gallstones at 12/13 and took until i was 22 to be taken seriously and have it checked which ended up in thier removal but i had pain that whole decade they ignored it because of my age. I have high blood pressure. almost lost my son because of it when i was pregnant, as it is he was 16 weeks early. only 1 lb. even. so at 26 i have chest pains regularly that scare the heck out of me, and back problems and feel like im 75, and literally feel like my time is limited. if that cant turn me around i dont know what can. but it hasnt yet. so who knows? i get with it and lose 70-100 lbs. almsot every year and then by the same time the next year ive gained it all back and sometimes more. my problem is its never enough when i start to lose i just want it to be faster which reignites my bullemia and in turn causes me to stop dieting completely in fear that it will get out of my control again and my children and husband will find out. happens every time. i also suffer from im fat but small compared to a lot of friends and family(or at least im taller so i look smaller) and they make me feel like i shoudlnt worry so much. ya know? which is asinine.

I'll be taking my picture this weekend. Actually, it's my "Middle" picture, because I've been working hard on getting fit for the past 3 months. I've been at the same place for almost 6 weeks. (Probably because I've been hit and miss on my exercise.)

Maybe we can have a place to check in on our excercise. Public bragging is a nice way to keep motivated. I wouldn't even mind a check off sheet/table that's posted to monitor our efforts. To me, effort is even more important than the results (at least to begin with.)

I'm a non-member so I don't have a portfolio. Where do I put my pics or am I banned from competing?
06/17/2006 10:18:25 AM · #74
Maybe send a pm to clara and she can send you an address to send it to.

Clara, did you get mine?
06/17/2006 10:38:30 AM · #75
so are we just uploading the before shots or are we actually sending in money...because I'm in if it's free...but the only problem is that my goal is to gain muscle.
