I have a 300mm lense that I would like to get more out of. Is a Teleconverter the answer or would I be best served to just save the huge money that I will need for a bigger zoom?

for a lens that is an F5.6 at 300mm I don't think you will be able to focus if you're using a 1.4x. Since i'm not as familiar with nikon I could be mistaken but I would advise you start saving those pennies :-)

There just are not any short cuts in life are there. Looks like big $ for me.

This was what I was thinking. Tamron 1.4

it may work, may not.
You lose 1 stop of light with a 1.4xTC - so your 5.6 lens becomes an F8. Many camera cannot focus if the see F8 (too dark) - but the camera may not see that - i know canon's TCs are so designed to only work with certian canon lenses, and will cause the camera to read the proper F-stop.

On my rebel i used and stacked TCs well beyond the recomended limit an dit still focused (outdoor, bright day). the camera never knew the TC was there although less light did reach the sensor so shutter speed dropped.

Tamron claims that it will work on any camera f4.5 and faster. If I can get one cheap enough on ebay i will give it a try before I spend several thousand on a bigger one. I will be waiting to spend several thousand for about 20 years anyway. lol

i spent £50 for a 2nd hand 2x tele from my local camera shop..

this taken @ 300mm with 2x tele 1/160 with manual focus - you get quite good shooting manual focus after a while ;)

That would = 900mm on your digital right? (300x1.5 x2?) That would be pretty cheap for $50. I am going to give it a try.

I just bought a Kenko 1.5X two hours ago and it did a respectable job but I do think I lost some image quality. I placed it on top of a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 and the Aperture went to f4 at best. For $86 I suppose it's ok...we'll see, the next time out.

I use a 1.4x regularly on my 70-200 and I don't see any noticeable image quality loss. I don't own one, but I have experimented with the 2x, and I can see loss with that one...

I use a Tamron SP AF 1.4x Pro on a Tamron SP AF Di LD IF 200-500mm 1:5-6.3. In good light it actually autofocuses but slow and sometimes hunts. It is better used on manual focus. With this combination the photos can be a bit soft but if you have decent light and a steady tripod they work fine.

P.S. - I also have used it with my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR with no visible loss of image quality but now I use a Nikon 1.7 with that lens.

Many of my shots in this thread were taken with the Canon 2x II teleconverter.

Keep in mind the price....if I spent more money or $400 something, for the Nikon 1.5X/1.4X I'm certain the image quality would be better. For my $86 it's ok...not the best.

Those are all nice shots. If I could get something that was remotely close to that I would be happy. I think you guys have talked me into it. Ebay here I come.
