Anyone know their moths? I would like to know what the name of this moth is. I found him on the deck post out back just waiting for his photo shoot.

I think it is the rare "Deckis postus" moth, but I may be wrong.

Karen - it coud be....the first image they show looks nothing like it, but the last image does.

yes - and that is the same common name as the one Karen posted. They must vary in color a bit.

Not quite the same. One is Ceanothus silkmoth (Hyalophora euryalus) and one is Cecropia silkmoth (Hyalophora cecropia). Not that anyone besides entomolygists would care;)

I agree that it's a cecropia silkmoth. Beautiful specimen too. :-)

EDIT: Didn't realize we'd used the same reference link. HA It's a great site for idenitification of moths & butterflies!

BTW, if you ever need some extra cash, you can sell the eggs, cocoons or caterpillars to collectors.

Its orgins lie om a small island in Japan, It species is Mothra Jr.

It's beautiful! :) And I agree with the identification, tho' when you get all the way down to species it can get tricky.
