i have a 707 that i got for 650 opened at circuit city. i didnt know about all the features that the 717 had over the 707 (memory stick pro, iso 800, HQX video..) and i got the 707. i regret that. now i want to sell my 707 on ebay (500 or so?) and get the 717 (730-800). i want to get the 1 gig memory stick eventually and i could really use the iso 800 and long length hq video, hot flash, histogram, etc.. im still questioning if i should sell my 707 for the 717. it would take about 250-300 most likely. with that i could buy 2 extra batts, IR filter, tele adaptor, and wide adaptor that i have been eyeing... any advice?
thanks

Sell your Sony for a Canon G2. Who wants to take pictures like John Setzler, anyways? ;)

º do you need iso 800? i've never used more than iso 200, have you?
º i don't care about the video, do you?
º i'm pretty sure you can sync flash with the cold foot, haven't tried it.
º how would you use a histogram in camera, viewing the lcd?
º same lens
º the memory stick > 128 would be a plus.
º i heard the 717 responds a little faster.
Yeah, i'm a little jealous of those people that have the 717, but i don't think it would make any difference for me. The only reason i might do it is if i took a lot of action shots and needed the quicker response. You'll have to decide if it would make enough difference for you. Good luck, hope i haven't made it harder for you.

The 717 does have some additional features that the 707 doesn't have, but I can't see any that i would take advantage of personally. You have to decide if those extra features are requirements for you :)

Personally, being a F717 owner, I don't think the differences between the two justifies selling the F707 to get the F717.
My recommendation would be to wait until an affordable larger format CCD with 10 or more megapixels comes along.

I find myself lately using more and more the histogram. It gives you a better sense of your exposure than the misleading brightness of the LCD.

I haven't used either camera, but I seem to remember reading that the 717 doesn't do infrared. Don't know how important that is to you. |

Hey a1leyez0nm3,
Here is some info to help you in your decision.
1st - I don't think the current dsc-f717 (sony 717) has the capability to store 1 GiG.
There is a limitation of 128Meg.
2nd - If you are looking for more storage capability, you may want to consider the Nikon Collpix 5700
(It is also a 5Meg pixal camera). I have been told that if you take a photograph under a RAW format, you can change the setting and correct the photo. (this is just here say)
3rd - If you still want the sony 717, You may also want to look at //www.bwayphoto.com
I bought my camera here for a steal.
Here's my story - begining of Dec. the web site started dropping prices on there stock. Back then they had the sony 707 and the sony 717. Both were dropping price and I decided to purchase the cheaper one (sony 707).
After they suckered me into buying other accessories the purchase was completed. I waited in-patiently for my new digital camera. What arrived was the sony 717 and all accessories for the same price.
The price that was quoted for the 707 was $509, so it was like getting the 717 for $509 although the other accessories were over priced. Good news is that I got an extented warranty for 4 extra years...
Personally, unless you really need the extra 2 or 3 features, I would stay with the 707.
LOL on your decision.
P.S. If you are not in a rush, You may want to keep an eye on the //www.bwayphoto.com web site for price adjustments.

well, apparently the f717 can do IR too (just like the f707).. here's a site with some pics: //www.pbase.com/slo2k/717_ir .. so i guess that wont be a consideration for you when choosing.

As a 707 owner, I asked myself the same question, and the conclusion I came to was that I would rather save the money for a Digital SLR. Upgrading to the 717 wouldn't solve the most frustrating problem I have with the '707 - judging whether a shot's in focus or not. It seems to me for that, I need a real optical viewfinder.
So I'm going to stick with my '707 (which I love) until a huge windfall lands in my lap and I can afford an EOS-1Ds (or whatever the equivalent is in 2020, which is when I'll be able to afford it, probably :-)
But that's me - you need to make your own decision.
