OK...So i went to the gym two days ago for the first time in a while...and I think I overdid it some. You know that part of your arm, not the elbow, but the other side...like the bicep, but lower than the bicep)...

Anyway, I can't straighten my arms for the life of me. It hurts. I mean if I sit here and stretch them out for a while, I can straighten them, but is it better to leave them stretched, and just walk around with them stretched, or is it better to just leave them bent lol???

Not expecting a response, just curious if someone knows what is best, and what would help this go away faster.

Thanks.

I've done the same thing before. You lifted too much for your first day back. Pain reliever helps. Streching also helped quite a bit. Otherwise you will just need to wait it out. Be thankful you didn't did the same thing with the bench press ;).

In general the best thing you can do is keep stretching it out, several times a day. But I'm not a doctor, so...

Like they said above, it seems like stretching it out and moving it around so it doesn't stay stiff would be a good idea.

Thanks tim and karma and madman...

I got them stretched out now...I hope I'm good to go back Saturday...

I think I'm going to skip the curls next time at least for a while anyway and just do the compound movements.

I've lifted weights for many years.

Ibuprofen is your friend.

I manage a health club, have worked out for years, and am an emergency medical technician.... Im certainly no expert but...

Ibuprofen IS your best friend... keep a constant dosage in your system for it to remain thereputic...
KEEP stretching...
Heat helps relax the muscles...

If you remain consistant, next time you wont be as sore... so dont get discouraged! You may even find yourself becoming one of those "sick" people like myself and get addicted to being a little sore! ;-P

take it easy until the pain goes away. After a few times at the gym taking it easy you can really up the difficulty and not get the same soreness. At least that's how it works for me.

The girlie man strained himself at the gym :-P he he

Oh yah, been there done that. You worked out your bicept and now you can't straighten your arm. It only hurts for a few days. Now that I have been hitting the gym consistanly for 5 months, I don't have that problem any more. Good luck sticking with your workout. Don't let this bother you. It really does go away after a few days.

Cheers,
-Jeremy

*am not a doctor*

A couple of peeps say Ibuprofen is your friend, painkillers may help you out in the short term but, from experience after a while they will get bored killing pain and then go and do stuff like attack your organs.

Ibuprofen does more than just releive pain. such as reduce swelling I think. not sure but I think that is why doctors give you that ver tylenol sometimes

it's not just about numbing the pain- ibuprofen is an anti-inflamitory which can help it from getting worse in some cases.

IcyHot may help the muscles too.

One more thing ... for what it's worth ... the pain is always worst on the 2nd day. So today's your day. It'll start getting a little better tomorrow in and a couple of days (unless you actually damaged something) you'll be as good as new.

I'm not a doctor, but I am a former EMT and a pretty hardcore lifter.

Did anything pop or tear in the elbow area?

This is not just a "advil" situation. The area you are describing sounds like you are talking about the forearm where the tendons insert into the elbow region. Correct me if I'm wrong. If that is the case, you have possibly caused yourself a more serious injury. Is the pain in the muscle or the joint area?

I've felt it before...I searched the internet and found a bunch of people talking about the same thing. It's called DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscular Strain or something...

I was 100% fine the day after I lifted, and 100% fine yesterday. When I woke up this morning is when it started. It's equal on both arms, so unlikely that I pulled something on both arms without knowing...it feels like the tendons or something are just really really tight.

That would indeed be DOMS. :) Good thing when your arms are ready to fall off. :)

yeah haha...I would probably get beat up if I lifted with the 2 pounders at the gym. I could picture it now.

Yeah, the second day after the over-activity is usually the worst. In the future, in addition to an anti-inflammatory, you should apply ice packs for 10-15 minute periods maybe 3 or 4 times over the first 24-36 hours -- this will also help reduce the inflammatory response. Heat after that (or before exercising) will help loosen the muscles and help prevent the injury in the first place.
