I know this has been discussed before, I can't find it in the forums.
Why do you check the comment was helpful box?
It surprises me how many people only check the comments that are flattering and not the ones who actually critique the photo, I guess that learning is not the only reason we are all here :P |

Different people find different things helpful :) It's as simple as that.

I only check the box when cute girls leave me a comment...

I`d like one that said "Was this comment pointless"

I've checked-off quite a few comments where the person said they didn't like the photo, and why. I generally try to not check-off comments which merely say "nice photo" or the equivalent.
BTW: Paige -- I went ahead and replaced the file for "Blaze of Glory" with the flopped version. Thanks again for the suggestion. |

I check most of them - unless they are completely unhelpful. I will make note of the suggestion not checking "nice photo!" ones...I have gotten some negative comments, but I checked helpful if they told me why. The only one I can remember not checking was "what the hell is this a picture of?" (when it was rather obvious).

My feelings are, if a person took the time to comment, then it was helpful, unless of course it's a nasty, mean spirited comment. Also, there are times that I don't even know a shot has been commented on. I can't wait until Drew and Langdon add the e-mail comments recieved feature!
I saw the flipped version and left a comment, It's a great shot and even better now:) |

I haven’t left very many comments just yet, and I realize my comments are just my opinion and they might not be the same opinion as the artist. But the few comments I have left I felt would have been helpful. With that being said, several have not been checked as helpful. I almost feel as if I have wasted my time for having taken the time, and wasted the photographers time for having to read something they didn’t appreciate. So I just sit in my little corner and watch. :) |

I check the boxes of comments that are flattering and I also check the ones that are constructive...you know the ones that tell you what is wrong with the photo and how to fix it but also tell you what they like about it.
I don't check the ones who are just down right rude and judgemental. I'm not here to have someone rip apart a photo I take.

Also, remember you can revisit your old entries and check off helpful comments you received then. |

I usually check all of the boxes unless, like someone else mentioned, the comment is offensive. Even if the comment is critical it still has value. But I have noticed that even my critical comments aren't checked and one liners like "Good shot!" are checked. I "feel bad" if I don't check all of the comments but I probably shouldn't check them all. :)
My comment rating is 33.31% "helpful" comments. What's yours? I'm surprised it's that high because I'm pretty blunt most of time whether I think the picture is good or bad, I usually just say as it comes to me. |

Like ChrisW123 says, I too check all comments except the odd nasty one that is undeserving of a response.
I sincerely appreciate the time that anyone takes to offer a comment on any of my submissions. It does not matter if it is a positive or negative comment. Thanks to all.
But, I really must go back and catch up on the older submissions as Drew has suggested in order to be totally consistent with this viewpoint. |

What suprises me is that some CC comments aren't checked as helpful. They were specifically requested, people spent time writing them (often in much detail), and I have a hard time believing there's nothing at all that's helpful about them ...

I check almost all of them. I really feel that most are helpful. I leave a lot of comments, well maybe a lot. I usually leave comments on 30-50 % of the entries. It takes a lot of time. But I wonder if some of my comments end up sounding arrogant, like I know everything. I really don't! But I also feel that this whole site and challenge idea works best when comments are left. I usually try to find the good things and leave comments on them, and then perhaps leave a suggestion or two.

Wow that seems like a lot. I think I usually leave 20-30% comments. I think commenting on the pics is half the fun. At first I thought it was more of a chore to vote on every picture and leave comments, but now I just take my time and enjoy it. If I don't want to finish right away I'll wait until later to finish when I have more time.

Me too and I try to send a private message thanking the person for commenting.I've been here since Feb. 4, 2003 and comments have help me to improve my photography when I look at my picture and can see what the person was talking about I will most of the time get back to the person.I think its ok also to say good job sometimes. We can go to extremes either way |

Please join my lobbying effort for a "Reply To Comment" button over there near the photographer's name/camera. It would be far easier to pop off a thank-you or reply if you didn't have to navigate to the person's profile page, send the note, then navigate back... |

I'm curious - how long does it usually take to get a critique? Last week was my first entry (From Above), and I'm pretty sure I requested a critique, but I still haven't gotten one.
And I promise to mark it as helpfull! ;-) |

GeneralE, that is a great idea, I think I remember Drew or Langdon saying that they were working on it. That and an e-mail being automatically sent when you receive a comment on one of your images. I have missed a few especially since the comments recieved numbers are wacked.

Not everyone who requests a critique will get one, due to the limited number of people in the critique club. If you do get a critique, it'll show up sometime within the week following the challenge. If you don't have one by then, it's safe to assume there is not one on the way. |

Well I just did this for one of my earliest entries, and found a whole bunch which were not only helpful but required clarifying responses. To answer most of them here, the kids are indeed selling "peace" -- the symbols they drew hastily (we had 15 minutes for the whole project) were way to light, and impossible to see on some monitors. It is a parody of/ironic twist on the MasterCard commercials, but not advertising MastercCard.
Anyway, belated thanks to all those commenters, and send a PM/email if you have other questions. |
