I am very new to digital photography. I have had a digital camera for years but have only been playing with it in a hit and miss situation and have not fully comprehended the manual settings and the "real photography" knowledge which I hope will come later.

My current delima is that when I try to experiment with the manual settings or other pre-programmed settings, I often forget which made an improvement or which didn't work at all when taking a picture.

How do those of you who take alot of pictures keep track of what you did in a particular shot when you are looking at around 100 photos later on to know which one you used shutter priority on or all manual settings or auto settings so you can repeat the procedure later and learn?

There is information attached to each file from the camera called the 'Exif data'. That data contains not only the camera settings but date, time and a number of other things (most of which differ camera to camera).

There is a section in the FAQ about this data (Exif).

Personally, if the image is important I use a pencil and paper to keep track of thoughts, intentions and yes even settings for the shot.

In my previous canon camera it had a software called zoom browser.

It used to provide info on what mode you shot in

Thanks David,

My file doesn't include information on which mode I use even though it does show the basic aperature, shutter speed, ISO etc...

Also because I take some pictures away from home, I do not remember what light or set up adjustments I make. I guess I should make up a form but I was wondering if there was one already out there.

I guess I could check the software that came with my camera. I don't use it because I use Microsoft Digital Image Suite for everything.

Thanks General

That would be a great way to go

My pocket PC has a picture viewing program that includes Exif data viewing...

I would be surprised if your Minolta software didn't... I would be further surprised if you looked on the net for some freeware that did this you came up empty handed...

Does the GIMP have Exif reading?

I do not know what GIMP is or if I have it

The GIMP is an open source image editing program (link).
