I know it's been discussed several times that the checkbox for helpful comments is often not used correctly.

But, I've never seen a suggestion for rating the comment, say on a scale of 1-5. I think it'd be a nice feature.

A problem I see with a rated system is what to do with the data from the current system.

ooo, that would be cool. Then you could put appreciated, helpful, confusing, etc.

because I like and appreciate the comments that say nice job! but they aren't "helpful"

Maybe instead of designating a comment as "Helpful" it could simply say "Thank You." That way, we aren't placing value judgments on comments received.

This is the best idea I've seen related to the "helpful" checkbox since a recent survey overwhelmingly voted to retain it. Renaming it to "Thank You" better fits how it is actually used. People either habitually check it or habitually leave it unchecked. It is meaningless beyond that.

Adding a comment rating, like 1-5, is not a good idea.

Comment rating does nothing for the person who recieves the comment and at best just strokes the ego of the commentor. What purpose does that serve?

Some will say a comment rating system will provide the commentor with valuable feedback that will help them to make better comments in the future. Get real. All it will do is generate even more whining and complaining by commentors about how unappreciated their comments are above what they already do with the "helpful" checkbox.

When I get comments that are meaningful I send the commentor a PM that contains the comment and why it was meaningful or what I learned from it. I often make detailed comments but NEVER look back to see if someone checks the "helpful" box.

It doesn't matter if comments are appreciated or not. What matters is you made the effort.

I'm with L2. While I understand the idea behind the suggestion to rate comments, my fear is that it would only serve to further deter those who are afraid to leave comments. Leaving comments can be a scary thing, especially when you know you're the not the greatest photographer and when you're not sure who's on the other end and how they are going to react. I think the most beneficial thing to do is to encourage people to leave comments however they can (within reason, of course) and not to make further requirements on how it's done. As people feel more comfortable leaving comments, I'm guessing the quality of comments will improve.

Actually, I like this idea better than my idea :-)

I would suggest this is all the more reason to make comments.

I often think I learn more about photography making comments than I benefit the recipient. That is because it makes me analyze the technical aspects of the picture closely and that helps me to better understand what makes a good photograph.

True but that doesn't necessarily make it easier. It can still be scary, especially with the knowledge that you could very well be called out and mocked in the forums. I just think that since we all like comments so much and we at least mostly all agree that they are beneficial to the commenter as a photographer, that it'd be great to do everything we can to encourage leaving comments.

I don't think that rating comments is beneficial to the site in general. True the check box that is there now is not used as intended but if you are someone who likes to leave true constructive comments as I do and don't have the thick skin I do, having a rating system would probably tend to cut down on commenting in general...

I agree, a Thank Yon check box seems like much better idea than rating and than the Comment Helpful box.

I'm also cautious of leaving comments because I am not a professional photographer. And I guess that even I will judge the comment based on the photographer who gave it even though I try not to, and understand that I'm sure that everyone, like myself, can see what would make a better photo even if they cannot do it themself. It just takes a reworking of the mind, and I just tell myself that if someone doesn't take my comment the way I meant it even after I try re-explaining it, then good thing they live somewhere else in the world.... (lol, that was a joke, for those of you who are thick skinned)

But yes, great idea L2...

Definitely. A while back I recommended having only a "Comment Appreciated" box in this thread. I think this may remedy quite a bit of discussion on this topic as some photographers won't check the current box unless it's actually helpful. This way the receiver can let you know s/he appreciates you taking the time to comment whether it was helpful or not.
