I know that borders are legal, but does it matter how they are achieved? Can you put the photo onto a larger solid color mat, or can you only create the border along the edge of the shot? How about side only or top/bottom only borders? Does it ever matter how thick the border is? I have not done much with borders, but would like to experiment and want to keep it legal. (I know this has been discussed before, but I did a search for "borders" and got a lot of results that didn't seem to have much to do with the subject!)

The safest legal way to make them is to enlarge the canvas size, but it doesn't need to be symmetrical, and there's no real limit.

You can't use a border to blend into your photo to create additional negative space not in the original capture.

Mostly photos with borders don't score that well in the challenges, but I use them all the time for my print images.

I think I put borders on just about everything. There's no rhyme or reason really...just do what you think looks good. I always just increase the canvas size...

Thank you! While we are on the subject, how about a small border--say just around the spoon in deapee's photo (I know that would look terrible, but there are times a small interior border would work and that is the easiest way I can explain what I am thinking).
