Okay - now I can speak....

My shot for Environmental Portrait:
DID contain a person
DID show the person in his environment
DID NOT include harsh processing contrary to some opinions
DID meet the challenge
and
DID suck badly in voting

Here is the shot:

The unedited original:

So - to save time, you may answer the following question with the number of your choice below

Why are you a poopieface?

1. I didn't think your shot met the challenge description
2. I don't like little kids having fun
3. Its personal, Cindi, your shots all suck
4. All of the above

btw - these are my outtakes, from which I picked the cute lil red haired boy.

Mine suffered the same way idnic. I gave yours a 6 and I believe my wife gave you an 8. I dont think I got around to tweaking my scores as I would have bumped yours up on this one. Just slightly outside the box didnt do so great on this one.

poopieface = anyone who complains about a score that's a half point or more above my average.

p.s. I gave you and timfy 7 points. :P

Sorry Cindi - But after reading the rantings I thought for sure your score would have been in the 4's or something. 5.5 doesn't suck badly. Hardly sucks at all actually. ;^)

Heheee the end score is a bit misleading. It ran below 5 all but the last 2 days of voting, I was sure it was going to end below 5. Seems it got a repreeve from the Governor or something near the end.

How about:

5. NONE of the above

I gave you a 6, it was a nice shot but if you read your comments it pretty much gives you all the reasons people might have scored it lower.

And I first thought it was heavily processed as well, the way the light is working it's almost impossible not to think so. Great capture, no doubt, one of those right place, right time shots. So it didn't score a 6 or 7, I didn't get the score I wanted either but that's the way it is when you take the chance of putting your work, your heart, your soul out for the world to judge, sometimes it gets trampled.

I don't think this shot sucked that bad.

I gave it a 5.

I didn't think it was overprocessed, DNMC or anything like that.

I just didn't feel any connection to the subject they way I did with the images I gave higher scores to. I think that's at least partially due to the fact that he's looking down I can't see his expression. The face communicates so much about the subject and it's not here. That's not to say that it's impossible to not show a face and have a good env. portrait, but it's much more difficult to do well.

I gave it a 5. Just a midway poopieface I guess.

Reason being, it just wasn't that interesting to me. Yes, it was a darling little boy floating in a pool. Ok. So it met challenge that way, but there was really nothing going on. No real story. Just a nice shot of a boy in a pool. Maybe had he been splashing, kicking his feet, etc, to give me a bit more something to grasp.

I would have chosen a diver shot myself. You have some nice ones there. Maybe 333929, or 333935. Those are my favs from your series.

I gave you a 6. I think it is a great portrait (yes, portrait!) of a little boy, absorbed in his own world.

I agreed with some of the other commenters that the darkness of the water seems to contradict the mood of the shot. Whether you burned it in (as you clearly did not from the sooc shot) or it was the way the light was when you shot it doesn't really matter to me. Either way it is the image that the photographer created. For me, a brighter overall image (like the water in some of your outakes) would have worked better.

Of course, you may have like the effect of the darkness with only the boy being illuminated. I am sure others do, too. Just my $.02 and the reason I didn't vote a 7 or 8.

Sorry that you are disappointed with the results. It is a sucky feeling.

HTH,
Liza

I've learned to be rather thick-skinned about scores and really this rant is more tongue-in-cheek than anything. I did expect that shot to score better, alas, I'm usually wrong about these things.

FWIW, he's in a river under a BUNCH of shade trees, not a pool, and the weird light is because he's in the only beam of sunlight around. Yeah, I should have choosen another shot for the challenge, but I just LOVED this lil guy's red hair and that beam of sunlight. Ah well, live and learn ;)

I didnt like the tilt, seasick feeling.

I gave it a "-1", only because I'm a poopieface.
05/22/2006 11:19:33 AM · #14
Cindi, I only sucked 6 places less than you and I wasn't drowning a kid :-P

We must ban together and beat down the poopieheads.

As a rule, when we Poopiefaces score "portraits", we tend to give more points when we can see the faces... Just a thought in passing...

To me in this challenge, like I do most of the the time, you chose badly. I like you outtakes 1,2,4,5,6 and 8 much better than your entry. I have the same problem of which one will work this week/challenge, who will think it fits the challenge, is it grungy enought?, etc... Well I feel your pain. :) Van

spell check

Van and Robert - You are both well-respected photographers and I sincerely appreciate your opinions, but I think I know the REAL reason this shot tanked....

I'M NOT FROM ICELAND! yup yup! That must be it!

...and the red/blondish hair pretty much knocks out the ever popular Third World votes. I gave you a 5 because I had no idea who I was looking at...or I got little or nothing in terms of information regarding the personality of your subject.

I don't think it's anywhere near your best work, btw.

Because of the level of talent at DPC, being slightly above average is really a good thing. DPC is a high level world wide competition and you should feel fortunate that other members consider you above average.

Average scores don't mean you're not good, it means you're as good as most of the serious digital photography competitors in the world.

Well for my self portrait, I flew to iceland, borrowed one of Manny's head scarves, shot myself on a cliff with a skiff and a sunset....ooh and a flower! That should do okay! ;)

Nope, you're doomed. You forgot the water droplet and the wineglass refraction. Sorry. Better luck next time.
