can we make the PRINTS AVAILABLE go away if want? the site used to be relatively clean/uncluttered -- that ugly splash makes me want to click away, rather than leave the screen up

how about a profile setting that would let those of us who want disable the advertising - you could set the default to 'enable' so everyone could enjoy it at least once :)

I understand the reason for the advertising but at the same time it does make it very distracting when viewing the home page you don't notice the winning photos you notice the now available.

I like to see some way of being informed of which images on the dpchallenge site have prints available. If not by the current method, some other method would be desireable...

How about an icon instead? Something like...

The information can ber on the photogrpaher's page, or on the challenge archive page. But NOT on the Home Page, please!

FWIW, I didn't even notice it until I read this thread. Then, I had to look in earnest to see it. But maybe that's just me.

Well, that WAS one of the reasons I paid for a membership... to eliminate the ads. PErhaps it should be turned off the homepage if you're a member?

I hadn't really thought of it as an 'ad' until this thread -- it was honestly just one of the many ways we had planned on trying to give our print sellers as much exposure as we could. I figured members would be happy to see it, though maybe you're in different shoes when it's not your image on the front page. There will be at least some indication that prints are available of these images, though I'm certainly willing to listen to opinions on what that indication should be. Right now, I certainly view it as incentive to win a challenge to get your 'print available' on the front page of the site for a week.

I can't say it bothers me in the slightest.

But if you're going to change it BAMaster's little P above is cute.

Is everyone referring to the yellow "print available" graphic under the photo's thumbnail? If so, I don't see how you would consider that advertising. It seems to me that it's just another of the little things that have been created as more of a service to let viewers know what they could get a print of. I don't find it distracting myself but if it does go away, I agree that there needs to be at least a small icon indicating print availablity.

I think it is annoying. The color and font are completely out of line with the rest of the site.

That there is a notice isn't a problem for me, but it would be much more pleasing and look much more professional (as opposed to cheap)when the notice would be a couple of pixels smaller as the name of the photographer, just black or a kind of blue (combo?) and in a normal stylish font instead of this "we announce a party"-style.

The style and size of "a digital photography contest" of the dpchallenge ribbon logo is a nice, informing but non-disturbing style.

This is probably one of the best solutions to it the icon would be a lot less distracting and yet would tell everyone that photo is available.

On the flipside, it might not be apparent to anyone who isn't a regular on the site.

Definately needs to be a way to show that a pic is for sale or not. I like the idea, as Drew pointed out, the incentive to have it on the front page by "placing" in a challenge. An icon sounds cool to me.

i didn't notice it at first, as it's barely more colorfull than the actual images it's "advertizing" for. if i were a winner (some day...) i'd love for that to be there.. maybe desaturating it might please some people.. but saying "print available" is a good thing IMHO..

I too think that "Print Available" is a little too big on the homepage. It seems like selling prints is more important than the results of the challenges. The text is bigger than the photo-titles and the photographers names. I think it´s important to show "Print Available" but not SO big on the homepage.

Check out the home page now -- good compromise? :)

Yes, looks good. But I must add that I liked the old text very much too - but not on the homepage. I think you can have it everywhere else if you want to, because it´s easy to see.

I liked the original also.. the new is ok i suppose :)

I prefered the other one... I didn't even notice the new version. That Icon idea sound good to me. :-)

I like this one. Doesn't make me feel *too* bad about not having a print available! ;)

Just remember that the more jealous you are now, the happier you'll be when you're on the front page :)

Great compromise, not as distracting as the other one.
