Hey everyone --
I was on a trip this past weekend and had to submit to the "Candid" challenge early. Here are some other shots that I took last week but got home too late to submit.
This is my first shot at posting outtakes, but comments are very welcome. These were really taken more for my own fun, but some probably could have been submitted.

Untitled is Great... I like Zoom too... Battery is a great shot, but too many folks seem to have a definition of candid that includes "people only" (I haven't found that definition anywhere) so you were wise not to submit it... I think Untitled is a great shot though and would have done well...
Here's some of my outtakes... |

Candid Outtakes
Rob, I've been driving up and down the West Cost for most o the last 3 weeks, so at least part of me feels for you. I think the strongest image is the second Lady Liberty (with the two gues walking toward the camera), but I'd probably tile it "LADY Liberty?" for added effect...
myqyl, I like mother_son2, but links seemed broken on several others, so I don't know about those. If you had resolution available, I'd probably crop tighter and try and see the kid's expression better...
My two candid outtakes (the third looks too much like my submission) are posted here. I'm curious if folks would rate either a 4 or higher... |

GE, My fav is Stand Where... I really like the light on the water and the tilt kind of made it 'feel' like standing further out on the rocks would NOT be a good idea... Kind of gave a vertigo thing...

And I just now finished telling someone else how I'm a better writer than photographer...had I found this post first I could have cited it in a footnote...(the subject of the other message!). |

I'm bumping this (the first outtates thread) back into the active list.
Can folks please try to start only one thread on a given topic, and then add your post to the end, instead of creating a new thread for every post. Especially for the "outtakes" thread, you are burying early contributors in the dormant forums area, which few people visit, which is unfair. It's also inconvenient to have to check out four or five different threads to see everyone's submissions. |

Yes, Untitled is great muckpond. Myqyl Mother and son is very well composed but I like the atmospher in the stairs picture. GeneralE the boy on the rocks is certainly more dramatic and on my scale would have gotten 6 or 7. |

Muckpond: My favorite of your images is Zoom. Nice capture. I also like Battery Park, though I agree with Myqyl's thoughts on voter reaction. The Lady Liberty shots I thought were not as good as the others. I mean, they're great ass-shots, but they don't really have as much to say. The pun in your alternate title had me rolling on the floor though.
Myqyl: First, I just wanna say I'm glad you're still floating around here. I saw another post where you said you needed a break from dpc. Just wanted to say that I value your comments and your optimistic/enthusiastic approach.
Okay, for your shots: I liked the expression of the little boy through the window in Carface. It's a shame that cusion partially blocks him and his sibling. Course, you had no control there. The only technical thing that I had to add was regarding cropping. I played around with my browser widow size to see if I could come up with a framing that appealed to me more. What I ended up with was a photo that would be taller than wide, cropped from the middle of the C in the car's name to just beyond the edge of the window. This strengthened the shot for me.
The mother/son photo is very nice. The softnes of the focus is the only problem for me. This is the exact problem I ran into trying to take candids this week. Alas, my camera is just not meant for the type of photos that can be lost in a moment. Too bad in this case, his expression is really nice. It would have been a really nice one.
GerneralE: Nice capture in You Want Me to Stand Where. I don't care for the title, but I'm the last one to offer criticism there -- it's definitely at the bottom of my own list of skills. I like the color of the photo the most.
The photo of the photo op on the other hand has an AWESOME title. I tried for many shots like this too, but in the end they all had flaws I couldn't live with. In this case, I would like the boy's hand not to block the dog's face and I would like to see the grandmother at a slightly different angle so that I can tell without a doubt that there's a camera in her hand. See, I'm a control freak. yet ANOTHER reason shooting candids frustrated me!!
Okay, here are my outtakes. (You'll have to scroll down. I didn't post this week's submission yet...) They're all soft of focus, which is my biggest dilemma. Other comments? |

already listed this link Spiderman's CANDID Outtakes in another outtake thread, but had to post it again to recount the thrill of setting up across the street from a strip club, waiting for some thug to see what I'm up to and run over to pound the poo out of me --- lucky/unlucky for me, it was a slow night, so he looked pretty bored ...

Spiderman,
I love Train Stop Nap. I love the repeated shape of the circle in the wheel and on the bench and I liked how the shape of the handlebars mimiced the shape of the back of the bench. This would have been in my top 10 for this week. You must have submitted something really good! Anyway, great capture.

Spider : I agree with Dawn on Train Nap... That's a 10! Walking home was powerful too, but much riskier here since everything isn't in sharp focus :)
Dawn : These are you OUTTAKES? Sheesh, can't wait to see what you submitted... The dancing man is my favorite, followed by the Oh Fudge shot. On a side note : I've decide to just avoid reading the more hostile threads... Outtakes seems fairly like a fairly safe place :) |

TerryGee: I like both the skateboarding pics but for the soft focus. Both of them capture the moment perfectly.
I'm also drawn to reading though I'm not sure what it is about it that appeals to me.
I think ultimately the first Riding shot is my fav here.
[Aelith and Myqyl:] Thanks. I really wanted to submit that boogie-man. I was going to call him Dancing in the Streets, but in the end I thought he'd get voted down for blur and grain. I was gonna call it Dancing in the Streets. It's definitely a more interesting picture than the one I submitted.
Myqyl: I'm glad you liked Oh Fudge. I really wanted that one to work, but I scrapped it because you can't really see her expression which was "I can't wait for this shitty day to end."
Thanks for commenting. Dawn |
