I have the strong impression that the USA-way of using the 1-10 scoring is quite different from what I am used to in The Netherlands. When I would get a school report the scoring would be from 1 to 10 (and not from A to D or whatever). In the margin my parents would read the following explanation:
10 = excellent
9 = very good
8 = good
7 = more than sufficient
6 = sufficient (i.e. the lowest passing score)
5 = just not sufficient
4 = insufficient
3 = poor
2 = bad
1 = very bad
If that 'value-system' is applied to what I see as scoring votes, I find the scoring far too low, especially when I compare the comments to the actual scores.
So, what do these numbers mean to the voters around here?

There are about as many different 1-10 scales on this site as there are users :) Everyone has their own method...

I especially like your descriptive list. I would say that I score near to what you have listed. Thanks for spelling it out, I will adopt it.

What I like less is that the average is 6 and not five.

for me the 5 means more not good not bad meet expectations

I agree in that for me, the average is a 5.
I use a system that could be described as :
10 = outstanding ( I want to frame it and hang it)
9 = excellent
8 = very good
7 = quite good
6 = more than sufficient, pretty good
5 = Average, good
4 = insufficient
3 = poor
2 = bad
1 = very bad

jimmsp: The adjustment you made makes this scale work for me. I'm glad you did it; I was feeling to lazy at the moment to take the time. ;-)

Far to reasonable! It will never go over with the common eliment. Being simply sufficient is bad. Very bad! So a score of 6 by your scale must be a 1 by standards here. What these numbers mean is absolutly nothing.Look, even on your scale "average" is not aceptable.But here average is considered offensive. Therefor the lower scores. Well, it's the only explaination I can come up with after a whole lot of reading and writing in this forum.

The reality of course is simply that 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 et cetera. A 1 is not very bad (it might be very good) but it's not better than 2. The fact that the cardinals are in play doesn't necessitate their having meaning other than providing an ordering across equivalence classes. Replace 1 with A, 2 with B, and so on. Note that each voter (you) should know that B pictures are "better" than A pictures, C pictures are "better" than B pictures, and so on. Defining "better" is the matter of much debate, but there's generally little doubt that people tend to group images together in classes, calling them scores, where each class is successively "better" than the last (or the reverse). Your score is not really relevant as much as the final ordering provided by the voting.

I agree that the final ranking is much more telling than the score. But even that is questionable when the scores are so out of line with the quality of the work.
