No, banning all landscapes would be bad. We could, however, ban all landscape shots taken in Iceland, and those from at or near Cape Cod, Sydney, or the entire West Coast of the North American continent. That would be OK.

Can we also ban all shots of children from third world countries? :-P

I didnt mind the flowers so much... what really bugged me is the colours..when i think complementary I think like yellow and purple... not PINK and yellow or RED and blue
SO yeah thats my two cents >.<
Gah I have the biggest headache

and a fine 2 cents it is...perhaps some people thought complimentary meant they look nice together!

The trend is that every couple of month there is a different abundance of one kind of entry. A bug shoot wins and we see a lot of bugs, a water frozen or put behind a colorful background and we see more of those. Kids, dogs, cats... You name it. At the end we look at wining shoots and try to see if we can reach equal results by doing what has been proven to work. Some will do it better then others, but in the end imitation is the best form of flattery....

Next time there is a thread, whiners shouldn't be allowed, much like the macro challenges. I just got so sick of seeing whiners whine I could barely take time to appreciate the few that were very well done. [/quote]

muahahahaha :P

YES!!! Ban flower photos (unless there's nudity in there too).. just kidding. I absolutely love taking flower photos. But I have learned that it is very difficult, and requires a lot of practice and care. I wouldn't mind if all three ribbons went to flowers, but I do not want to see crappy flowers with weird shadows, bad lighting, and too much water sprayed on them ;-)

Flowers are amazing subjects. Overdone maybe.. but to imply that you suffer when voting flowers is pushing things a bit. If you don't like an image, feel free to vote it down.

LOL, what a thread. You know, there's too much colour on DPC at the moment. I'm bored of red, greens and in particular blues. No more please. A pure cyan image with no shape or texture - that's what I'm looking for.

You know what, if we're banning water, I'd also like to extend that to anything contains water. So from now on I'll be rating down any pictures containing leaves, animals, fruit, flowers (ESPECIALLY flowers), air and human flesh. Dry sand / rocks and dust should be ok.

I was only talking about the next complementary colors challenge, not every challenge. And this has been done before for the macro challenges.

I remember that one, no bugs in Macro, I think it was..
I tend to agree, but as an earlier poster mentioned, I also score based on creativity. It doesnt have to be wa-ay out of the box. But I do tend to score flowers, and a few other overdone things lower based on boredom. FOr me, if you are gonna shoot an overdone subject it has got to be an Outstanding example of said subject.

My 2 cents :)

Alright, now you know, mine IS a flower shot. . .

And I really did make my best attempt to be creative with it. I spent a long time thinking it over before shooting and I spent a long time in our yard shooting from many different angles. I converted all of the shots from RAW and messed a little w/ each one before picking this one.

I understand people being bored w/ overused subjects, but I just want you to try to look at images with an open mind in each challenge because you don't know what may or may not have gone into the shot. Vote based on the merits of that image in that challenge, not how it compares to the myriad other images that have been done for the past 100 years.

All that said, I am very happy w/ where mine ended up, I don't feel I have come up with a winning, top 10, or top 20 image in any challenge yet, but I feel like I am improving and that's what I want.

FWIW - to some of the comments:

The water drops were from rain, I had no way to avoid them without somehow hand-drying all the intricate spaces!

The light is a bit dim, but it was overcast. The shots I did w/ flash didn't look good at all. Perhaps I could've bumped up the exposure or done something in PP. The crop is very tight, but I was trying to go for something that was clearly a flower as the subject, but not just about that - more about the colors, lines, light and dark.

Hey! I did a flower shot too. Wildflower, but still... ;^)

Had fun testing out a new star filter. Always wanted one and never bought it until just recently. The filter also gave this that soft focus look. I thought it came out looking kinda cool. BTW - the water is morning dew. ;^)

Hay cycleboy. Hows Santa Ynez Valley doing. Lived there for many years in Solvang.

I like flowers but there does seem to be too many of them. A challenge with them may be refreshing.

I, too, lived in Solvang for a few years. I love the Santa Ynez Valley. Now I'm up near Morro Bay.

I LOVE FLOWERS!

SYV is great! We moved from SB/Goleta area about 2 years ago mainly because we could afford it in the valley. It has the small town feel that SB had when I was a kid, people still know one another and neighbors still talk and do nice things for one another. The cycling is excellent! At this point, I wouldn't move back to SB even if I could afford it.

I could do without all of the tourism generated by Sideways, but then again, it is good for business for a lot of people.

I'm waiting for the poppies and lupines to bloom up on Figueroa Mtn.

Don't feel bad, yours scored higher than my floral entry. :)

In many ways, as long as you use a tripod it is better to take flower pictures in shaded or overcast conditions like you did. You get better tonality that way. It is just harder to get proper depth of field. In your case the centered composition seemed to work but generally speaking that framing would be considered a "snapshot" perspective most of the time. Its primary strength is your closeness to the subject. You opted to frame/crop it very close to highlight the flower. That was a good decision and what made your composition work. Water drops always add more viewer interest to a floral image.

If you would have adjusted to brighten and highlight your colors more and had a bit more sharpness this image would have scored higher.

Here is my entry:

Thanks for the comments, they are helpful. I used a tripod for all the shots I did for this challenge except the ones when I was laying on my back.

The last part is interesting, I did mess w/ brightening and also sharpening, but the brightening seemed to make the yellow offensive and the sharpening made me have to fight issues w/ artifacts. Perhaps if I had more time to play (and had read the landscape learning thread!), I could have done a little more to it.
