Ed,
Welcome aboard. One thing you might want to think about is that if you wait until you are "ready" then you may never submit. I'd recommend jumping in with both feet and seeing where you land. If you are trying to guage the voting habits on DPC then IMHO you are wasting your time. I too did the same thing when I joined and after much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair I decided to do what a great many here on DPC do, shoot what I like and let the score fall where it may. As an example of the "voting pattern" let me share a couple of comments from my present challenge. I have one comment that goes "Good photojournalism shot, but doesn't exactly catch my attention." while two comments later I have "An unusual shot that makes me look a bit longer." As you can see there are highly divergent views on the same photo. The scores will also show that. Probably the only set rule of thumb for high scoring shots is they have a certain "WOW" factor but no one seems to have a corner on generating that WOW (except for maybe Rackat who's entered only 12 challenges and has 5 ribbons). Anyway, that's my two cents worth and is worth every penny you paid for the opinion.
Once again, welcome and hope you'll decide to join in the challenges soon.

What is often forgotten is that photography can be an art form. Art will always be subjective. When it stops being subjective, it stops being art. It is the blessing and curse of art contests.
