I'm aiming to get some freelance work this summer with the local paper, and I'll need to be able to show them a portfolio. I've got the pics, but I need some advice on what to do with them - the best way to present them.
-Should I have them in hardcopy in a book?
-Can I do it electronically, so I can email them? And if this is the case, what's the best way to include the caption?
Come on, oh titans of DPC, hear me now, and help me! ;-D

really ya gotta have and do both... bring your portfolio in and show it to em, then hand em a card with your website on it, so they can follow up there! |

Well, first if you're going to email them anything, I would use a single collage-type page with a very few selected samples, and your contact information. And angle an interview to show your work and discuss your ability to help them... etc...
As for what you take? Your budget will likely determine that. Either nice prints pro mounted in a pro book, a printed coffee table book or whatever.... they see everything, there is not standard for TYPE of portfolio... only for quality of portfolio.
That said, choose only your very very very best shots. And only show them a few, maybe 20. (Some suggest less than 10).
There are several websites about photographers' portfolios, do a google search.

Get a leather-bound portfolio presentation book and fill it with 8x10 prints. That way you can use the same book for different clients (if you're cheap and dont want to get more than one :P) |

Thanks all! Guess I'll be makin' some prints and looking for a (inexpensive) book to mount them in after I get them toned up.

Someone suggested leather scrap books from Costco. I bought a set (they really are nice and come in all sorts of colors) but haven't put a portfolio together yet. If you live near a Costco and are a member ... maybe check them out.

Hey, those are really nice! No Costco here, but a Sams. I'll have to take a look and see what's available.
Thanks!
