I'd like to take this opportunity to tell Daniel Cuesta (graphicfunk) how much I appreciate his contributions to DPC. Aside from the fact that he's one of the few members I can feel young standing next to (he being 67 to my almost-60), I think Daniel's just a heck of a gentleman and a major force-for-good in DPC.

He gives selflessly of his time, particularly in comments and critiques. He's been a member for just shy of two years and he's made 13,000 comments! That's something in the neighborhood of 18 comments a day, and it's a stat I'm in awe of.

He never seems to get riled or upset even when he has a "right" to. He's forgotten more about good old traditional photography than most of us will ever learn, and he's selfless in sharing what he knows yet never seems to push himself on us. And to top it off, his critiques/advice always seem spot-on to me. Well, nearly always anyway :-)

Dan, I'm glad to have had the chance to get to "know" you here.

**************

There are many other people in this community I could praise for their contributions, or acknowledge just for "who they are", but I'd like to see other members step up here and do that: why don't YOU take the time to single out someone for praise and a simple "well done, friend!"?

Robt.

Well, Bear, since ya bring it up, you aren't lacking in contributions made yourself. From you landscape photography thread (which btw, I have been reading) to your help with photoshopping, you're always around with constructive tips for question askers.

This Bud's for You :-)

excellent thread, bear!

i have to thank dan for pointing out to me one of the greatest lessons i've learned at dpc: always have a strong subject, even in a landscape. it's not enough to have a nice sunset--make it an image of something that has a nice sunset to compliment it.

i've always said i can shoot, but i can't pick...it's always given me a smile when one of my entries has caught dan's eye while he was voting.

cheers to you, dan! keep it up!!

Just want to shout out for Jutilda. She has commented on so many of mine and others images. It seems like almost every time I upload a batch of shots, she is there waiting to give a few tips. So thanks a bunch it is much appreciated.

I'd like to recognize Fritz, or Kirbic. The man is a plethora of knowledge, with everything from cameras, Photoshop, to astronomy, science and much more. He is always there to share his knowledge on anything, and does so in a pleasant, non-condescending manner (no matter how silly your question is). He does a bit of traveling, meeting up with fellow DPC'rs along the way, and seems to make friends wherever he goes. He has an arsenal of lenses and equipment that one could drool over for a few hours as well. We are lucky to have him on the site council.

Thanks Fritz!

I also want to shout out a thank-you to Jutilda for all the great comments and encouragement. Judy's enthusiasm is contagious, down-to-earth, and just plain wonderful.

Another good dpc friend who deserves mention in this thread is ubique. Paul is an inspiration in many ways, not least of which is his huge contribution of many detailed Critique Club and "regular" comments. There have been several times when I felt like I should give up on this hobby, feeling talentless and hopelessly boring... only to find yet another encouraging comment in my portfolio from ubique. Thanks, Paul!

Not to derail the thread (in fact this should and could branch off somewhere else) but this is a lesson that applies to some great photos - it isn't a requirement for all great photos. Some of my most favourite images don't have any obviously defined subject or a very small, non-dominant subject. There is a predispostion towards the style of the 'strong, bold subject' at dpc and I think it is a particular malaise of the small format/ 640x480 or 4"x6" style that digital mostly encourages, but it isn't the only type of photo.

Personally, i think macrothing leaves sharp, incisive, and honest commentary. I sometimes get more out of his one comment then several other "good job" or "nice pic" comments (although i like those as well). :)

And, kudos to the aforementioned, jutilda, bear, and graphicfunk.

Maybe off topic a little but "applause" for the site council. They get hammered on a weekly basis and seem to keep their humor.

There are a lot here that have been very helpful for me that I would like to thank.

Scalvert: For posting his savings from camera equipment he finds all over and other things.

Sher0904: For providing me with links and taking the time to explain grunge brushes

Skiprow: for all his wonderful advice on photography. Just look at his profile

Also Bear_Music,Well he does a lot.

jenesis
For becoming a great friend that can deal with my ramblings.

There are a lot I know I have forgotten but I will add more when I start remembering.

I'd like to give Posty Appreciation Awards to the following:

graphicfunk and hotpasta: I get more in-challenge comments from them than anyone else, and they are always useful.

fotomann_forever and ART ROFLMAO: for making me laugh.

GeneralE: for entering whatever the hell he wants to into the challenges.

Bear_Music: for the poetry!!

I must add that I love Dan's comments even if alot are on liners they are never ' great shot' type comments. I always love reading his comments

I have always found stdavidsons comments incredibly insightful though I dont think he as ever commented on one of my photos! I also find his contributions in the forums helpful as well.

I love Art and his humour he makes me smile every day- he has an amazing mind that man and when he dies it should be preserved for science.

I used to enjoy BradP contributions though he does'nt seem to hang around alot anymore.

Jutilda is a fabulous prolific voter and i enjoy all her comments on my photos and friendliness- she was the first person to send me a PM. I was thrilled.

Kari1 and kiwipix always comment on my and my daughters photos and have been very encouraging-our own personal cheerleading team! I have enjoyed meeting them in real life.

Gosh there is lots more but I cant think of them right now!

Oh yeah Suemack another great kiwi who has been supportive and encoraging of me and freely dispenses many hugs in the forums!

Thanks Charlie.
Actually I drop in here & there, but kinda' got turned off with all the nit-picking and disqualification legalities and such.
The site has changed a lot in the last year, and my heart just isn't here as much as it once was.
Was getting PM's from users saying they weren't going to comment or fav any more because I would periodically remove them to make space for new pics. Portfolio space was always an issue.
Now I get to see this on the home page everyday for the next 3 weeks.

This brings me to phase 2 of my line of thought, and this is an important one.

I'd like to publicly state my appreciation of Harvey Wilcox (Coolhar) for his contributions to this site and. equally important, to MY persepctive on this site. It's no secret to any of you who follow the forums that Harvey and I rarely agree with each other in ongoing discussions, but I appreciate the hell out of this man even when I find myself irritated as hell by some of the things he says. I like how he always remains true to his ideals, and always remains level-headed in expressing them. I like how he gives me a frequent reality check on my own perspective. I like how DPC allows all of us to interact so constructively.

I appreciate Harvey, basically. I think he's a very good photographer and a decent, compassionate human being who remains true to his own ideals regardless of pressure from others to change.

A tip of the hat to you, Harv!

Robt.

Wasn't meaning to hijack this thread in any way, and I'm sure a number of members will frown and think how tacky.
Wasn't my intent.

I do intend on thanking so many here on this site.
I have NO WAY to single someone out, and many of those I would even consider have already been mentioned.
Instead of picking one person, pick a name from my favorites. Each has left a mark with me in one way or another.
To everyone in my list of favorites, thanks for being you, your contributions on this site and or to me personally.
Some have a great deal of time to contribute, others may only have 30 minutes a week, yet consider each as important as the other. This site could have 2 great leaders or 100 great soldiers. Each is as important as the other in my opinion.
