I think some are neglecting to see something very important here: Site Council is not a popularity contest, neither is it filled with people who can do most to help us learn photography. We the community are here to offer each other that assistance. The SC is filled with people who often silently and behind the scenes handle the jillion BS questions and queries that we the members make on a daily basis. Yes, they do also handle disputes, but that isn't the main focus of their position. Just think of the time spent on validations each week....

But we do have a say. Each of us can choose to renew our memberships (or become new members).
While this site is not a democracy, I don't get the feeling its a dictatorship either. Its just that there are is a great diversity in the membership, and you can't please all the people all the time. However, if they really cheese off most of the people, those people won't come back to the site.
Having said all that, I nominate (or second or third, or whatever the number is by now) Bear_Music. |

Feel free to discuss nominations until ya'll turn blue in the face (hmmm, I just had an idea for cliche), but please don't get mad at us when we don't implement it immediately. Or announce vacancies in the near future. We are just trying to make sure that you (membership collectively) understand, at this point, there are no "openings."
When, or If, we bring on more, ya'll will be the first to know. ;) |

So, why the heck exactly do y'all despise Bear Music so much? It really seems that everyone thinks that appointing him to SC would be a reward for his involvement in the site.
I'll tell you, folks, from being as close to an SC member as one can be without being an SC member, IT ISN'T ANY FUN!!!! In fact, many days, I'm convinced that Karma is being punished for some untold sin in her past. Endless complaints, work to do, on and on and on. There are no perks. At any moment a totally displeased user may wreak havoc in the forums that they are expected to moderate. Heaven knows what insane request someone may be submitting via ticket within the next ten minutes. They are under continual scrutiny, they are insulted, they are accused of everything under the sun, all the while being expected to be helpful, polite, and even outgoing in the public forums. On top of that, they really do have to know the rules inside and out, in addition to mentally keeping up with tons of precedential ruling that they personally may not have had any involvement in.
If y'all love Bear so much, my advice would be to enjoy what you have. Tap his extensive knowledge. Enjoy his photography. Appreciate his tutelage. Ogle his historical opportunity to work with Ansel. Learn from him. But for goodness sake don't PUNISH him!
:)
I say it with a smile, but I'm not really joking. You would see a lot less of the Bear you know now if he were on SC. It's no piece of cake, I promise. It's sure not a country club. It's a tough job. |

Do you guys take nominations or applications? Or is by appointment? I mean, wasn"t the last SC simply added?
Although, Bear has shown himself to be quite the fotographer, quite the encourager and quite the gentlemen. So when the time does come for a new SC member I would view him as an excellent selection.

That has certainly been true for me. Much of my forum activity and voting is in the SC threads and validation requests. |

When we need more people, we make an announcement and take applications from everyone who is interested. If someone is nominated a billion times, they have to apply themselves still to have a chance.
If you are referring to kiwiness, he was a SC member long ago and had to leave for a number of reasons. When he was ready, we invited him back onto the SC without any questions due to him having being such a valuable asset before.

I second your denomination of Bear. He hasn't done anything half bad enough to deserve it. |

OK, it seems being on the site council is a punishment, not a reward :-)
I think a lot of people wanted to recognize Bear's contributions. So how about instituting a recognition program? Make him a "DPC Fellow" and give his icon a mortarboard (or at least a gold shirt). (only half-kidding here). Perhaps it could be like one of those "lifetime achievment" Oscars -- once a year the members vote on who was most helpful.

While I truly appreciate all these recent "nominations" because they make me feel good about how the community perceives me and my contribution to it, I do agree that they are ill-timed and pointless.
They are particularly pointless because membership in SC is not (nor should it be) based on popular approval/recognition. SC functions as a group to which certrain tasks have been delegated, and the primary criteria for membership ought to be how well an individual could function within that group and what particular skillsets s/he adds to the group. Realistically, only SC themselves can decide that, and personally I'd be disappointed in them if their only criterion were popularity or, indeed, if popularity were even a major factor in their decision.
I am equally made uncomfortable by suggestions that I somehow deserve a "special" avatar or something to recognize my "contributions" to the site. I'm not in principle against some sort of system for recognizing contributions to the site, but I don't believe I'm any more obviously entitled to such than a LOT of other people. I don't consider myself that special.
It is true that I am very visible, but this is more a measure of time available and desire than anything else; I'm retired, I love photography, I used to earn a living at it and teach it, and I like to share. I'm not doing it because I expect "recognition", and I wouldn't want people to think I am.
So I truly do appreciate y'all's support, but I don't think there's a lot of point in it. I appreciate the public "applause" for what I do here, but I wish it would be spread around more broadly. We have many members who contribute selflessly and often. I'd ask that each of you take the time to praise THEM as well.
In fact, I'll start the ball rolling by tipping my hat to graphicfunk here. Why not follow me over, and let this thread die?

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I meant to propose some sort of recognition for several members (one is too few, but 1000 is far too many). Perhaps 1 "fellow" for every (100? 1000?) site members.
Bear, to put your mind at ease, I didn't intend to propose that you alone got the recognition, there are a few others who also deserve recognition. (Also, if the recognition is a special avatar, it could be the same avatar for all who get recognized). |

That's kind of what I had in mind ...
I think the French actually took part of one recent year's bottling and converted it into ethanol fuel, when a glut of a harvest left them unable to sell it at a "reasonable" price as wine ... |

Given the rising fuel prices, they might be better off selling a nice Cardonnay. |

I nominate Chuck Norris instead of Vin Diesel. Chuck got a massive round house kick that will kick out any DQ's.
By the I would love to be on SC. They have the coolest icons...
