Hi everyone,

I'm halfway through a studio still life course at a local college and I have posted my results so far on my pbase photo page. I welcome any comments/critques :) We do in class critiques, but we're few and I'd like to throw the images into a large community of photographers :)

Would also like to know which you think is the most powerful/best result.

They're all under Images 2003, and if the link doesn't work, I'm going to attempt pasting it here: //www.pbase.com/sylandrix/images_2003

Thanks

I thought the photos were pretty good. My personal fave was #7, but I'm weird. I also liked #5 alot. Can I ask what happened to #3? I thought it was the best, but the top is cropped off :(. I thought the lighting was perfect on #2, but it seemed a little off on the two metal ones (#4,#5). BTW, did you know there is a photo competition at //www.digitalphotocontest.com with a $500 dollar top prize (plus smaller ones). The theme of this months competition is "Still Life". Give it a shot!

I particularly like Still Life #1. The red stands out nicely and creates a nice 'touch of color' without overpowering the rest of the image.... nice work on all of these :)

All the photographs are pretty neat. Still Life #5 is simply stunning. I liked #7 as well. With Still Life #4 try shooting from another angle - it will make it more dramatic. The lighting of Still Life #3 is fantastic, but I feel that the top of the jar should have been included - the subject need a little bit of breezing space (in case of this shot it is probably just me, in case of Still Life #2 I would definitely give the glasses some more space.

#3, #5 & #7 stand out for me, with #5 probably being my favourite of the bunch. I really like the way the two objects reflect each other, and a nice job keeping the camera/yourself/the rest of the room out of the shot!

The crop/framing on #3 doesn't bother me at all, in fact I think it's better than an version with the full bottle would be.

If liking #7 makes me wierd too then so be it (I'm already most of the way there!). It's a very strong image with good texture & detail.

Some great shots there, keep up the good work!

... oops, must remember to hit post before I go for lunch!

David, You have some good pictures. I like them all. some cropping is good and some need some work. The lighting is excellent. The copper pot lighting is a bit to bright. I'm impressed. Keep shooting.

I think that photographing nice still life shots like these is an art in itself. It takes a little effort and time, not to mention finding just the right subjects for the photo. Each of these shots has merit and I really like the whole lot.

A still life can also be a statement about the photographer who made it. Lots of still life photos are of subjects that have sentimental value to the photographer or whoever commissioned the work. They make great decorations... :)

Thank you everyone, I appreciate all the suggestions and comments!

The cropping on #3 I believe was intentional, must go back to my raw images and see all the versions... It was a wine glass behind a short bottle and I remember the top of the wineglass not looking quite right when juxtaposed with the other bottle.

#5 was definately the hardest. I spent almost all my classroom time just setting up the environment around the shot so that I wouldn't have any unwanted reflections. The entire area was almost completely enclosed in fabric and I triggered the camera's shutter from far, far away :) :)

Thanks again for the feedback,
Dave
