hi everyone --

i will be travelling to tartu, estonia at the end of june. i have a few questions for anyone in the know. i would like to spend some time elsewhere in europe as well in the first week of july or so.

1) i have heard of low-cost european airlines (ala southwest in the U.S.) but don't know much about their performance in the baltics. can someone give me ideas of airlines or websites that can help do some planning?

2) i am having trouble learning about train service in the baltics as well. there is one estonian site that has some rail info, but the english site is often offline. if anyone has any suggestions for other sites, that would be swell.

3) i have only travelled to italy and france. i would love suggestions for out-of-the-way (but somewhat accessible) places to visit. yes, i understand that it's an entire continent. the fact of the matter is that i'm going to estonia anyway, so i might as well travel around a bit as well.

essentially, i will be in estonia for 3 days. after that, my schedule is wide open. my trip is a giant blank canvas. once i get my plans in shape i would love to spend some time meeting locals...wherever i end up. :)

ps -- i have always wanted to visit berlin...however, with the world cup bearing down i just don't think it's feasible cost-wise. am i wrong?

Right this second, I don't have tons of info for you, but need to just say...

Don't forget Sweden and Denmark - just a hop, skip and a jump over to us from Estonia by ferry. There are lots of great photo opportunities in Copenhagen, for example. It's a really fun city. A mini get-together would be great. I'm definitely interested, and possibly GuGi) would be as well.

If you find other DPC'ers in northern Europe, please post a thread or PM if you're interested in a get-together. I would definitely consider coming down to Berlin or somewhere that distance from Southern Sweden.

Have fun in Estonia - sounds exciting!

For European no frills/low cost airlines check out //www.ryanair.com, //www.easyjet.com, //www.skyeurope.com, and //www.hlx.com There are many more but those are the ones I have experience with. I know the ferry from Tallinn to Finland is pretty straightforward though I have never used it myself. Hope that helps :)

I forgot, Tallinn is a beautiful city so if you can, try to make it there. I loved it and really want to go back.

I LOVED Tallinn and would definitely recommend a visit - and from there it's a very short (and cheap) ferry hop to Helsinki - a complete contrast. Estonian country side/ coast is meant to be very pretty too...

You could probably save most by sticking to the immediate region...

The Atlanta paper had an article about ten "up and coming" European cities that would be cheaper than, say, London or Paris. The full list, including Tallinn and a couple of Polish cities, is here. For a more detailed look at each city go to this page, beginning with Tallinn.

Not much help for transportation, but maybe some ideas on where to go.

Dear Rob,
The budget airline that flies to Estonia is EasyJet. They depart daily from Stansted, U.K. (near London) and Berlin Schönefeld airports and land in Tallinn, the capital. The easiest way to get to Tartu from Tallinn is probably by bus. They depart approx every thirty minutes whereas there are only a couple of trains a day. The travel time is about 2 hr 30 min. The bus station is only a 5 min taxi ride from the airport. Having said that, I would recommend a short walk around the Old Town of Tallinn which dates back to medieaval times and have lunch at Olde Hansa restaurant. The prices are about 1/3 to 1/2 of what you would pay in the U.K., depending on where you go and what you do.
Have nice trip. If you need any more info, drop me a mail. I'll be glad to help, if I can.
Best regards
armin

A bunch of (mostly ;) ) good looking, atheletically fit guys run around on a green thing called a pitch, and kick a thing called a ball into the other teams net. Voila! :D

For rail timetables, I've found that the German bahn.hafas.de website has one of the best search engines around (and includes info such intermediate stops between your start & finish point), and covers routes across all of Europe.

Hi Rob,
Just another idea to consider. You'll be about 8-9 hours jet-lagged when you fly in. One way to ease the pain of staying awake during a conference would be to arrive a couple of days earlier. In this case flying via Stockholm could be an option too. It's a lovely place, I remember vividly Skansen open-air museum and the 500-year-old Vasa warship but locals would have more ideas. Most importantly, instead of flying from Stockholm to Tallinn one can take an overnight ferry that leaves about 6 p.m. Sailing out in the evening through Stockholm archipelago (for about 3-4 hours) is a truly memorable experiance, especially while enjoying all the scenery alongside with a sumptuous Swedish buffet dinner etc.
