To whomever left the comment :
"Need a better camera"
Thank you... But now my wife thinks I've opened another account and put that comment there just to annoy her... If you wish to make a more constructive, helpful comment, please leave a comment to the effect of:
"Need a better camera. Tonight's winning lottery numbers will be __"

He He, I raided my savings to get a better camera. Doesn't mean I'm taking better pictures. :-( |

A better camera would not change the framing, the composition , the artistic side of it, the 'meet the challenge' .... I do not know what your picture is .... if that one is 'grainy' like using a 400 or 800 ISO film .. I do not take that in account. But true it could influence the quality of the exposure and the colors (but that could be partially corrected by photo editing). So .. keep good faith in whatever camera you have, even if we all dream of a better one and even if you need a 'better one' more than me. Good luck for this challenge Lionel

But what a better camera will give you is control (any control, please just some control) over exposure and depth of field. It should have more effective light metering, and better focus. And the resulting image should be less grainy and of better quality, in general.
That last issue may not be soo relevant for 72dpi usage here on DPC but it's a lot more relevant if you hope to print an 8 x 10 enlargement of the photo.
Actually, even on DPC, better resolution allows you to crop out much more of the raw image, to focus in on one element, this might be to improve composition or whatever. That gets harder when the raw image isn't high-res enough.
But fully agree that it won't improve things like your ability to identify great subject material, select the right composition, and make artistic decisions about how the picture should ideally look.

In my case for example, I only do a slight ajustment cropping, I try to frame it the wait I want it right away. I did some pictures using my Canon s30 at only medium resolution 1024 x 768 and they comre REALLY great on a 8x10 print using the epson 820 (99$only). So resolution is important but lens as well, even in a digital camera. Right now ... I think I would advice phhotographers to buy a 'good 2MP' instead of a 'bad 3MP'. And then .. rely on your visual judgment on the 'crime scene' to try to do the right picture right away. I still think that even with digital cameras ... the photo is created mainly at 'shooting time', not in the software darkroom. So .... keep good faith .. and .. I will give an other look at the picture next week. Good luck for this week Lionel

oh by the way , that 1024 x 768 I was talking about is therenumber8 (in the gallery) .. and really it comes out GREAT. And actually that gave me the idea of starting a calendar. Each month I am preparing a 'number' picture . I use this //philtilden.com/cal/index.html to generate the calendar , if you select thin lines and reduce the size of the numbers .. you get something really great on high glossy paper !!!!

Yup - Elizabeth, I was sort of answering Lionel's answer to your point about a better camera not resulting in better pictures!
:)
In that there are some elements of taking a better picture which are unrelated to camera, and others which are enhanced by a better camera.
I got a comment this week on my picture from my husband who said something along the lines of how hideous it was (and as I read the first few words I started to feel indignant) and then the comment finished with a recommendation to buy a new camera, perhaps a Minolta and I realised who it was from! (He's been BEGGING for days now, it's really quite endearing!)

Lionel,
I think the Number8 shot is terrific. I love the framing and the colors. Great idea re: the calendar. Someone also mentioned a challenge that involves numbers which I thought was a cool idea.
