Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone has their work in gift shops, restaurants, etc. for sale. If so, how did you approach the owners? I put a brochure together but I stopped in a couple of places and the owners weren't in. Should I mail the brochure with a card first and follow up with a call or a walk in with samples? Or should I just keep dropping in and hope to catch them? Not sure how to do this. Also, did you sell them the work at a discounted price, or are they on consignment? Any input would help! Thanks, bj

Yes, I have work for sale in several different shops. I've found that it works best for me (I'm in a pretty rural area) to take samples with me and show the owner - usually a shot of something relevant to them or their business, unless they already have artwork for sale there. Then after talking with them, ask if they are accepting consignment work. If so, how do they handle it (%s, space allocation, approval, etc.)? Most of the time I've been lucky enough to have them actually purchase what I've taken in with me, so the sale has gone pretty easily. Of course, that's where being in a small town helps - knowing everybody's business and what they like! ;-)

Good luck & don't be shy!!! You certainly won't get anything shown if you don't ask. And don't be discouraged if you get turned down - there's always another opportunity somewhere else.

What worked for me was getting involved in the local camera club (I don't have Jimmy's courage :)). Our club does shows all over the place (hospitals, city hall, local businesses) and also is asked to photograph events such as First Night Annapolis. Joining a club also hooks you up with other photographers who may know the local market and hanging opportunities.

Maryland has an artist registry (other states may also). You sign up with the state and have access to opportunities that aren't publically known (state government requests for exhibits and proposals and such).

"How to approach Gift shops"? Just walk right in, ask to see the manager, and say "Alright, I'm here, where's my gift?"

jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢ Thank George Carlin for that one.
