I ordered one earlier in the week! Shipping to the UK cost almost as much as the tablet itself, but I had a voucher to spend! :D

OK - so when these tablet thingies arrive, will there be a tutorial so we can all learn how to use them? :-)

I am still using my 4x5 Intuos that I bought in 1999. It's so old it has a serial port connection! But I love it, and can't imagine being without it. At that time, I got it for dabbling in Photoshop, but now I use it not only for that but as a mouse replacement. If you have any sort of discomfort in your hand/wrist from using a mouse, you might want to consider one of these. I just keep the tablet in my lap, and since I'm not reaching for the mouse, I have no wrist strain whatsoever. They're fantastic!
So if you were thinking about getting one, perhaps this will help make your decision a little easier. :)

We can keep this thread going for a place to ask questions and give tips. I'm hoping the learning curve isn't toooooooooo bad.

The learning curve isn't bad at all, and to me, anyway, the 4x5 feels especially natural. Just bear in mind that, like mice, sometimes they need a little tweaking in terms of pointer speed (and in this case, how the table maps to the screen - on a 4x5 tablet, I find it quite comfortable to be able to reach all the corners of the screen with a turn of my wrist, without any arm movement. But this is all a matter of personal preference, of course.)
When you do buy one, the first thing you might want to do with it on your computer is just open Windows Paint or some other really basic paint program and doodle for about 10-15 minutes. That way, you won't feel tempted to to do anything too advanced with it, and you'll be focusing completely on movement. IMHO, once you do that with it to "calibrate" yourself, you may well prefer it over a mouse! :)

It's currently 11:26 AM EDT.
The DPChallenge servers are in the same time zone as B&H -- you can use the Current Server Time listed on the bottom of any DPC page as a reference.

If you've ever used a pen or a pencil, you should find the tablet pretty intuitive. |

When you get the tablet, be sure to install the drivers on the disk. I think it will work without it, but if you install the drivers, you will be able to customize things like how sensitive it is to pressure and stuff

Well, I finally bit the bullet and actually ordered one. My very first purchase from B&H. Am I on the road to hell now?

I'd say the other direction, but I think the folks who run the place don't exactly believe in that either ... : )
The hardest thing to get used to with the tablet is direct-addressing -- you don't have to scroll the cursor across the screen to get to a menu or control window -- you can pick up the pen and put it down again and the cursor will magically be at that position. You just have to imagine that the tablet represents a scaled-down version of the screen.
Also, if you want to double-click, you might have to hold the pen straight up and down so you click in roughly the same place -- the driver/setup options/preferences should have a control for how far apart two taps of the pen can be and still be considered a double-click; this is more important if you don't use the mouse for "ordinary" functions. |

I figured I had to do it as a gesture of faith and trust. Have you set a date yet? Karma's getting cranky, keeps pestering me about when she is gonna meet her new sister Lexi...

I've played with tablets before, actually. I expect to be using the mouse for most of what I do on the computer, and the pen for specific Photoshop functions, like selecting, dodging & burning, stuff like that. I anticipate that even in Photoshop I'll mostly continue mousing. I may be proven wrong, we'll see. But the one thing that pisses me off is how difficult it is to use the mouse freehand for selection, and I know the pen is much better for that, so...
What I'd REALLY like to have is a large, horizontal screen that I draw directly on :-)

Yes, they make that too ...
Your assessment of how you'll use it is essentially right-on ... : ) |

I have the Wacom Intuos 3 [9"x12"] tablet. It was not hard for me to adjust to the drawing and editing with the pen. What I would like to do is build a stand to go under it so I can tilt it. Like a drafting table.

Yeah, that's what I was mentioning earlier that I wanted to hold out for. But I finally decided what the heck, 60 bucks with shipping ain't that big a deal, and it gets me started.
