Today's the big day; I'm about to spend the afternoon/evening with my dentist...
No, no, not what you're thinking, even WORSE than a root canal:
He's close to retirement, and he wants to develop a hobby, and through interaction with me he has decided photography is it. So he and I are going to hit the camera/software stores. And he has money to spend. And I know it's going to hurt.
I only hope I can avoid sinking into a whimpering pool of self-pity as he whips out the credit card and buys 6-7K worth of stuff...
Robt.

Do the ol' "Man, I'd like to get one of those some day." Maybe he'll repay you for your help.

Hey, maybe he'll let you borrow some of it! :-)
He'll probably need software and maybe even a PC/laptop for post.

Pay him back for all the pain he's caused you by talking him into buying a Nikon.

No, it's not like that; he's already informed me that he prefers to jump right into things. My advice to him is to start out with a good prosumer and learn his way up the curve, but I think he's gonna go for a dSLR right off the bat. He's seen both my Coolpix 5700 and my 20D, and...
Everyone else; he's already done my immense and valuable favors re: caring for tooth problems I can't otherwise afford to fix, so this is my repayment to him. I'll be teaching him photography. It's an explicit quid-pro-quo. And he already has an excellent computer. Photoshop will be one thing he'll be buying, probably. If he gets Elements bundled, we may stick with that for starters, not sure.
And now I must off and serve. It is time. Wish me well :-)

| Make sure you preface any "I wish I had this" with "Remember that time you started drilling before I was fully numb?" :-) Have fun Robert, he is lucky to have you as a teacher. |

back on topic....
He is very lucky to have you as a teacher Robert...although that sometimes can become more painful than today's experience. I was teaching a 80yr old how to use her computer and email her grandkids....that toothache has been ongoing for 5 yrs now!!

I feel your pain. It's always difficult watching people spend money on things that A)I can't afford but would like to have, and B)they may not really need in the first place. Especially when these high-dollar purchases compound the level of complexity involved because you will be asked to show them how to use it!
In this respect, though, you may be better off steering your Dentist towards a DSLR rather than away from one. I know many people who find a DSLR easier and more satifying to use than a digcam, even for brand new users. And this is not becuase of image quality, but because there are fewer settings, dials, buttons, and switches to have to keep up with... and there are no %@#!$)% movie modes!
Also, if your Dentist can afford it, and he likes to spend his money, let him. I find that trying to backseat penny-pinch for people who like to splurge a waste of breath. And to make it easier on yourself, steer him towards the gears and stuff that you are already 100% familiar with. Then you will know how to handle his questions without having to resort to a manual. |

There are two additional interesting options - he'll decide he doesn't like photography after all and give all the nifty stuff to Robert (which is not very likely - I suspect he'll very much enjoy it if Robert is teaching him), OR he'll like it a great deal, decide he wants even more/better cool stuff, and give the original purchases to Robert as he upgrades. :-)
Good luck, Robert - actually sounds a bit more like fun than pain! |

"Man, I sure am disappointed that you ended up getting that crummy 4GB 120x CF card, I just remembered that it's a terrible brand. Tell you what, I'll let you have my ol' workhorse. It's a bit smaller, but I've not had any problems with it, and I'm sure you will appreciate the peace of mind..."
:)
Oh yeah, and follow that up with "IS is actually a bit of a win-lose situation. I've heard that the 70-200 f/4.0 is actually sharper than the 70-200 f/2.8 which in turn is sharper than the IS version... I sure wish I had remembered that in the store before you bought it. Oh well, I'll let you upgrade for a mere 100 dollars..."
Heh, dastardly.
Don't forget the lens pen! |

Ah, thanks for reminding me.
One thing I had kept in mind was that, as a dentist, he might be wanting to use his new rig for photographing his work in the office. And of course, if this were the case, he'd NOT be looking at a prosumer, and he WOULD be writing the whole package off at the office, natch.
As it happens, he had attended last week a seminar on cosmetic dental work where they discussed exactly this, and gave their recommendations for equipment. Which, as it happens, precisely coincided with mine. Macro lens, Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX, 20D/30D body.
So it appears to be the case that he will be buying the Canon rig, but he is digesting all the info now.
Probably the 30D, the 100mm macro, the 10-22, and the 24-70 for starters. He's interested in landscape photography, and eventaully in shooting birds (his place is on the marsh). I suspect he'll be getting a 100-400mm after not too long a wait :-) And of course we'll be tripoding him and all that.
So that's where we are at now. There's a possibility he'll be getting the 30D and swapping with me for my 20D, just to make me happy, but that is definitely not a given. Part of the "package" I am involved inw ith him is that I'll be teaching him, and that's goinhg to involve a considerable time investment on my part, so...
I'll let y'all know when and if it happens. Got my fingers crossed on that 100-400mm, cuz then I can borrow it :-)
