I need all the help I can get here...How do you file and keep track of your digital images. What I now do is file each into folders on my hd. I have a cd burner and I do transfer them onto cd's that I label the same as folders...eg: Botanics, Domestic Animals, People, Amphibians and Reptiles, etc. But filing them to folders is taking up a lot of time. Any suggestions? All ideas will be appreciated and considered.

Hi there. What I do, is just leave the photos in the file they were DLed into because the file it creates is titled with the Date. Then I take and add a small description to the title of the folder for example 7-04Fireworks Or 7-15ZOO That way, I still know the date, and now I know what photo session it was. I have heard of some programs that will sort and file for you, but I don't know the names. Maybe someone else will be able to mention a few programs that help with that. ~Heather~ |

Gracious, Heck, I don't even store them on my computer. I download straight from my camera on to a CD. It has the dates of every picture on it. It is great. I tried your way and it was way to time consuming. This way is much easier for me considering I have 4 kids and a husband that likes to play hacky when he gets home from work. :) Hope you figure something out. Sonja

Gracious, you could check out the program "Thumbs". That might be something you'd find helpful. Their web page is //www.cerious.com/, and I think they have a working demo download.
I've never tried it, so this isn't a recommondation.. just a thought.

It is a small, beanbag-like "ball" that people play by keeping it in the air using only their feet -- originally as a form soccer practice, but I believe there's now more elaborate games, if not an "officially recognized" sub-culture... |

JASC (publishers of PaintShop) also sell Media Center Plus which allows you to organize any kind of media files, plus publish them to the web, and do some other cool stuff. It's cheap too. $30 to download, $40 to buy in a box.
I've started to organize my photos with it. Like any other catalog, it's a pain to set up but once your initial pile of information is in it, it's pretty sweet. You can assign a pile of keywords to each shot so you can search by location, camera, subject, or anything else you want to make up.

Gracious, I was just looking at your pictures of something old. They are good. I love them all. Very creative. My favorite is the one with the candy. Good shooting. Sonja |

Gracious,
Hey, this may or may not help you, but my husband designed a program for me to help me keep mine organized. It's nothing fancy - it only does exactly what I asked for which is this:
I put my smart media card into the card reader. I open his program. I specify the origination folder (the card reader) I specify the destination folder (into my pre-existing file of categories on the hard drive.) I specify a naming scheme (whatever the photo shoot was). I check or uncheck "Delete originals" as desired. I click Do It.
So while my photos shart out with the annoying numbered way the camera does it, they end up neatly filed in the desired folder and named fireworks_001, fireworks_002, fireworks_002, etc...
It's quite small (less than 1MG), so if you're interested let me know and I'll make it available for download.
One thing: it requires the shockwave plug-in.

I have about 7 Rexx programs that run on Linux (They might work on Windows with a bit of tweaking). They do the following:
1. Create a directory YYYY-MM-DD_N. Current ISO date plus a sequence number in case I have multiple sessions in one day. 2. Copy the jpegs and info.txt file from cardreader into this directory. 3. For each jpeg, extract its info.txt entry. 4. Rename each jpeg to YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM_NNNN.jpg and create a similarly named .txt file in the same directory. 5. Put the info.txt data into the .txt file. Also add fields for title and group in the .txt file. 6. Create a thumbnail (uses Imagemagick) for each jpeg. 7. Read the .txt files and create an index.html file for each one.
So that I get 2002-08-14_1/ 2002-08-14_1/index.html 2002-08-14_1/info.txt 2002-08-14_1/thumbs/2002-08-13_14-13_2345.jpg 2002-08-14_1/thumbs/2002-08-13_14-24_2346.jpg 2002-08-14_1/2002-08-13_14-13_2345.jpg 2002-08-14_1/2002-08-13_14-13_2345.txt 2002-08-14_1/2002-08-13_14-24_2346.jpg 2002-08-14_1/2002-08-13_14-24_2346.txt
The program that creates the index page refreshes any thumbnails for altered jpegs. The directory can be renamed if its a wedding or a holiday, e.g. "2002-07-15_1_Uncle_Bobs_coming_out_party"
Heres an under construction index page (I tried uploading last night, but the connection was very slow). //www.uberfish.freeserve.co.uk/Pics/nature2/
Heres an early version of an index page: //www.uberfish.freeserve.co.uk/thePit.html
