Sometimes things are so obvious that you just don't see it.

I have never understood how lenses always seem to have dirt and dust on them when you know you cleaned them before putting them away.

I just happened to look at the INSIDE of a lense cap.

When I shoot, the lense cap typically ends up in my pocket. I clean the lense with a brush before putting it away, but the cap has gotten filthy while in my pocket.

DOH!

Nobody has dirty pockets. Time to start cleaning the caps as well.

One time my my 4 year old nephew was hanging on me messing with my pockets and later when I put my lens cap (the back one) in the pocket the used gum he'd left in my pocket got inside the cap and of course i didn't notice it... sigh.

Ended up stuck all over the inside of one of my lenses...

LOL

Good call...the shame is, we can't even credit pointing it out.

I guess we'll just attribute this advice to Nobody.

I can't imagine putting a naked lens cap in my pocket, sheesh. I learned not to do that eons ago, back in the Pleistocene or something. Call me anal, but I carry around small ziplok baggies for this job :-)

We're sorry to be so stupid, Mr. Music.

Sheesh.

Ok anal, I will consider taking up this habit too as it seems like a good idea :)

/e wonders if taking a picture of a naked lense cap would qualify for a nude shot

As a side note good thinking Nobody, I am new to this set to so had never thought much about it. Trust me I will now.

That's all you do? I first wrap mine in a fresh papertowel- being certain to carefully fold and tuck in each corner. I then wrap that in aluminum foil, followed by carefully laminating the whole thing before placing it into not 1 but 2 ziplock baggies.

But I do wonder why I keep missing some fantasic shots.

I normally wind up shooting when I'm wearing something without pockets, so my lens cap typically winds up getting tucked in my bra. Guess that's not a good alternative, either.

I ALWAYS put lens caps in back left pocket - because keys are usually in back right pocket if I'm shooting somewhere without a purse - which is most everywhere.... never even thought to clean my lens caps. Thanks, Sam! Now I have more work! :P

That's what I do, too - with the outside of the cap against my skin, does THAT help? :-)

So that's why cross-dressers cross-dress, so they've got somewhere to tuck lens caps?

Sheesh.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way, really! Looking back, I can see that sounds pretty snide... Hell, it took me a BUNCH of filthy lens caps before I learned my lesson. I was actually trying to poke fun at how long 've been doing this, but the emphasis didn't come out right :-(

I thought the whole idea of a cap with a strap is so it hangs?
04/14/2006 05:00:41 AM · #21
The joyous world of SLR's, watching that perfect shot disentegrate while you try to find a place to keep your lens cap.

There are lens cap straps available I think, but they're not commonly used from what I've seen.

You all have given me a brilliant idea on what to do with my wife's nursing bras when she's done with them...

Look for these on eBay in a few months! ;-)

Yep. And I also have a line of men's underwear that you can store your telephoto lenses in a pouch right in the crotch. Convenient storage and impress the ladies at the same time!
