After watching the dvd I now want to read the books but there seems to be some controversy on what order to read them in..
They were first published in this order. (And this seems to be the order the Films will also take)
1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
2. Prince Caspian(1951)
3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
4. The Silver Chair (1953)
5. The Horse and His Boy (1954)
6. The Magicians Nephew(1955)
7. The Last Battle (1956)
But all current editions have them in this order.
1. The Magicians Nephew
2. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. The Horse and His Boy
4. Prince Caspian
5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6. The Silver Chair
7. The Last Battle
Has anyone read the series and have any thoughts on what order and why? |

I read the published order and loved it. Not sure why there is an order change?

What I remember is that his estate changed the order. I think because that was what C. S. Lewis wanted? But yeah, The Magician's Nephew is really the beginning, explaining how Narnia came to be created. But honestly, it doesn't matter if you read that first or later on.
edit: The Horse and His Boy was written later, but it appears as a telling of a story that was from the time of earlier books. And it doesn't matter what order with this one really, either. Although I would think it makes sense to leave it in the original order because it actually does include the "this happened long ago" element (while the Magician's Nephew does not, which is why I read that first).

I believe the second order is set chronologically within the universe of the books, while, obviously, the first order is by publication date. Years ago I read them following the first order and enjoyed them.
If I remember correctly (and I may not), the four Pevensy children appear in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Last Battle (though the eldest sister doesn't appear in the last one). Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I just read all 7 last week. My set is an older set, starting with "Lion,Witch,Wardrobe". I don't think order is that important as they all read as their own story.
Milo, you are right about the Pevensies.
Edit: Finished reading #7 last week, didn't read all in one week.

| i have had this collection (in it's original publishing order) for most of my life and have read them so many times i can't even count. i personally don't think it really matters what order you read them in (after the lion), as they are all fairly self contanined. it never even struck me that things were backwards or out of chronological order, since each one tells it's own story relating back to the same theme, and each one gives off a bit more history and draws a larger character base than the next. all slices of the greater whole, i suppose. |
