I'm going to NYC this weekend and just realized that not only is it Easter, it's also Passover, and thus B&H is closed until next Friday. Scratch that off my list of things to do. But it does give me money to perhaps spend elsewhere.

Also, the first three times I've gone to NYC, I've taken my Nikon CP4300 P&S. What is your opinion, should I lug my Rebel and lenses around town, or just take the P&S again? I'm leaning Rebel, but there's the whole weight thing and the safethy thing.

I'd be afraid of someone stealing it. But then again, you might have a perfect oportunity to take a rare/important shot that the coolpix just wouldn't cut it for...

Take the DSLR. The air is still reasonably clear - no summer haze set in yet. Good sunsets. Early morning light means getting up at 5:30am to get out and shoot. By 7:00am the sun is high and the long shadows lost. NYC has recently made it harder for photographers - anyone using a tripod in a public place has to apply for a license. J&R is open, even if B&H observe Passover. The city is safe as regards carrying a camera.

No point having a DSLR if you're too scared to take it along on the interesting trips - make sure it's listed on your home contents insurance (or get separate camera equipment insurance instead) and go and ENJOY!

Take your dSLR and practice safe tactics walking around and you will be fine.

The city is beautiful right now. Lots of opportunities for flower macros! :D

I was there last year and had my Rebel out the whole time. Probably gave my husband a heart attack because of it, but all was fine. I wouldn't worry about safety too much. Just use common sense as you would anywhere else. Too many great photo ops not to have it with you and it isn't really THAT heavy. :-) Have a great trip and I feel your pain, B&H was closed when I was there too. :(
