Thanks Leroy. That item's photo gives me an idea. Maybe I can make my own lens hood with some PVC pipes and stick it onto my UV filter, so I could screw it on my 55mm barrel :)

Actually a darn cool idea |
What about gluing it onto an el cheapo step-up ring... then you don't have to always use your UV filter... provides more flexibility. |

Order up a sheet of Neoprene Rubber and cut the shape out with an exacto knife.
Curl it, glue it and then stick it on your Canon. (Yeah... just a bit dirty minded today.) |

Hmm... perhaps an old mouse mat. Print it out on paper and use that as a pattern to cut up the MM.

Anyone made one sept me? i wana see some other ideas. The PVC thing sounds cool and alot more durable. Even though you can print a few and pre cut them put them in an envelope and keep em in your bag ide like to see the others you guys have made.
WHen you curl the paper around the lens you would be suprised how stuff it gets. I was thinking of checking at a craft store to see what other paper type they have.
My lens filter thread size is 62mm i used the canon 60mm and it was a bit big so i printed 98 and 96% and tried them both one of them works not sure wich. My lens has a thin outside diamiter so im sure thats why the canon 60mm was a bit to big.

Why not make it out of a thin plastic?
perhaps a heavy duty shower curtain or cheap flimsy placemat? |

You pay all that money the canon glass and you don`t get a lens hood.
Buy sigma :) lens hoods inc. |

The main reason I use a hood is so I don't bang the front part of the lens since I'm clumsy and it does get wacked on occassion. I don't think this paper/bendable plastic solution like this would work for someone like me.

OK! Consider this a dumb question!
Why do some of these hoods have such fancy edges?
Does that imply orientation is important?
Be kind!
OK! I found some info...
Lens hood design
Should have googled first!

To block the light. If the light comes in on each side the hood wings are shaped to block it. Sine the light is more common from the top they are usualy longer. Like a baseball cap.
I think it helps reduce lens flare?

Acutally, the fancy looking edges are to maximize the area shaded, without causing vignetting on the image.. the corners are cut out like that b/c if they were there you'd be able to see them in the pictures... |

If you buy the good canon glass, it comes with the hood ;)
My main use of a lens hood is lens protection though, so a less robust hood isn't much use for how I use them.

I'm gonna' print on heavy paper, cut it out, then trace to that thin black plastic that use get to bind reports and papers in. Should be sturdy enough.
This is so cool!

How are you going to coonect the 2 edges? paper is kinda easy. Plastick may need some other kind of bonding. |

Even size 72mm fits it if you choose the right stepup ring for it. :-)
Thanks for sharing the paper cutout lenshoods, this is something really fun, I will try it for sure! Wonder how many people will say I am a scrimp with a 70-200/4L and a cardboard lens-hood... ;-))) |

I thought of somthing that would be neat is to use photo shop and add some neat graphics before you print it.
Petals from a flower would be kinda neat for girls. The petals would blend in with the shape of that one and could look really colorful. |

Superglue! Worked like a charm, I've now got a hood for my 50mm that looks nearly Canon-esq.

They dont make superglue like they use to. Its like water soluble now or somthing and can fall apart fairly easy. I tried last winter to glue my brothers snowboard boots and nothing worked.
Finaly i found some really old "made in usa" super glue that didnt even have a brand or somthing and it worked! |

I mis-spoke. It was actually Instant Krazy Glue. So far it seems so good. I got a dab on my fingers and it stuck them together pretty well. So here's hoping!
