I have read the posts concerning the differences between the two (20d and 30d)...but still need some help. :)
...and I think I'll stick with Canon, since that's what my other lenses are.
Since my 20d was stolen on friday, it appears my insurance will cover the replacement cost. Should I just pony up the few extra bucks (out of my pocket, of course) to get a 30d?
Is there any reason for me to just get another 20d?
How 'bout this scenario, at B&H:
$ 1,499.95 - Canon EOS 30D, with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Autofocus Lens
- or -
$ 1,579.95 - Canon EOS 20D, with Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens
Thanks for the help.

I have no suggestion but I am glad to hear that the insurance will cover the loss! :-) |

I don't know that I would upgrade from 20D to 30D, but *definitely* if your choice is between 20D or 30D as a replacement, go for it. You'll like the improvements.

Thanks! :)
*fingers crossed* They said they would cover the replacement cost, but I won't feel 100% comfortable until I have the check cashed.

I don't think that the 30d has any de-provements so if you have the opportunity to upgrade for $80, why not?
Edited to say: I see that it's actually like a $300 upgrade since you didn't list equivalent lenses in your comparison.

Right. Sorry about that...those are current B&H package deals.

The 30D body-only is selling at so close to the 20D price that I can't imagine NOT getting the 30D. It's worth it for the 2.5" LCD alone. Trust me :-)

I'd have to agree. Even if the differences are minimal (2.5" LCD aside) they are improvements. Heck, if you can pony up the other $2000, a 5D might look pretty tempting.

It seems cool on the surface, but after deductibles and fixing my truck... and BEFORE paying anything more for an upgrade, I'll be out $1000.
Make that $1,014...for the lunch I ate while I was getting robbed.
I would have MUCH rather had that $1000 to go towards buying a new lens and kept the 20d.
All in all, I'm happy to have the insurance to cover the replacement, but I really don't like being out $1,000. That hurts.

I suggest the 30D body only for $1399. I don't think the 18-55 lens is worth $100.

A mate of mine has had a 20d and now has a 30d and says like others here that it`s worth the extra for the larger lcd alone. |

I think the 30D is a pretty easy choice over the 20D unless you get a great deal. I will certainly not upgrade from the 20 to 30 but from nothing I would pony up the bit extra for the 30, just for the spot-meter. |

I would go for a 30D as I already did.
your extra dollars pay for the:
2.5LCD
picture style
10%battery life
spot metering
new software
most importantly, you got a new toy!!

On this new camera make sure you get a similar policy as mine.
NO DEDUCTIBLE $3000 coverage for theft, damage, or loss is only $36/year

I'm sitting here considering selling my blood to help raise the money to pay off my 30D. Maybe I should just get insurance on my Olympus and get it stolen.... Okay, I'm kidding (sorta). But, I'll definitely come up with the money to insure my 30D when I get it. |

I will DEFINITELY do that. Thanks for the tip...your coverage sure beats my homeowner's coverage (but I'm still glad I have that!) :)

If it were me I would opt for the 30D, the addition of spot metering would seal it for me.

I didn't finance it. It's on lay-away. I should be able to bring the new baby home by the first of June. Part of how I'm paying for it is trading my Olympus, but I'd like to keep the Olympus as a back-up camera. That's why I was thinking of selling my blood. To raise the money I would get for trading the Olympus. |
